Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

No problem here. Smartass comments are good at times like this. They tend to break the tension a bit. :o)

I was thinking the same thing. Over the past 24 hours every movement that has appeared to be going NW has been followed by a decided bump due west. I would be interested in seeing a straight line drawn from coordinates 24 hours ago to new compared to the same feature for the past 12 hours. I am not sure there would be much difference.

Sadly, some people are that stupid and wait for authorities to tell them what to do.

In defense of some folks, like tourists from overseas, there was a reporter on television saying that some people hadn't even had the news on and didn't know there was a hurricane headed their way.

This is yet one more reason why it's critical that mayor step up to the plate and make a decision and dam*ed soon.

Could be an end to the historical French Quarter.

Next Mardi Gras may be held in Baton Rouge...or further North.

Anyone in NO waiting for this mayor to decide whether he should leave is brain dead already.

Problem has/had been that tourists, etc. have not been following the news while on holiday. Last night, there were many who simply were not aware of the storm, or the gravity of the situation.

One foreign tourist saw a news camera crew, and asked them if they were filming a movie.

CNN (in spite of that idiot guy) has some interesting coverage this AM...showing what the storm surge can/will do..then they have local tv stations now and then. They've sent Jean Meserve down there- she said she talked to some people who said they're leaving..because they can't swim...others who said they've "been through this before and it never happens".

My God!

Last I looked at this thing, it was a Cat 2 or 3 meandering in the Gulf. Now it's a Cat 5 aimed pretty squarely at New Orleans? Good Lord.

Katrina is quite the nasty bitch, eh?

I'm stunned. I keep saying that, but between the strength of the storm and the criminal stupidity of the mayor, I almost (but not quite - LOL) have no words.

If things go bad, the Democrats will blame Bush because the La National Guard is in Iraq. Watch and see.
