I was a tad flabbergasted at your quote in today's AP Story in the Boston Globe regarding gravestones for US troops killed in action.
Your criticized the Pentagon's policy of inscribing headstones with operation names, such as "Iraqi Freedom."
Frankly, having visited too many cemeteries over too many years, I would find it of compelling historical interest to see where a GI sacrificed his / her life for our nation. I have a long-ago relative who died in W.W.I and whose stone is a simple government issued white tablet listing his name, rank and detachment. I wish I knew where he died.
I can't believe your quote:
"It just seems a little brazen that that's put on stone," said Jeff Martell, owner of Granite Industries of Vermont. "It seems like it might be connected to politics."
Maybe, Mr. Martel, it might be connected to patriotism.
Coming from someone from the Ben and Jerry state, home of Howard Dean the yeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhawwwwwwwwww chairman of the Democratic National Committee, I am not surprised.
But as a taxpayer, I am disappointed. And I am angry. I am paying you to inscribe those stones. If they conform to a family's wishes, it is not inappropriate (in fact it is historically relative) to describe the theater of operations.
If you have a problem with that, cancel your government contract.
Otherwise -- to paraphrase Laura Ingraham -- "Shut up and chisel."
I have been trying to get him to let me post his letters to the Boston Globe for a couple of years now, first shot.
Please tell FRiend's uncle that he did a bang-up job. Kicked butt and took names!
Ping
Best darn LTTE I've read recently!
I still say the Globe is only good for kindling when I start up my grill (nothing beats a charcoal grill).
I asked him to FReep mail me his letters, so that I could post them. The guy is a Rat and works for a Rat Rep, but he has his act together, he sees what we see but from the other side, I have no problem with that.
Excellent aim and shot Bill. Proud to be your friend!
