Tom McClintock on the propositions (CA special election)
Tom McClintock ^ | 8/24/2005 | Tom McClintock

I've been getting calls about the various ballot propositions for the Special Election.

Here's how I see them:

Proposition 73: Parental Notification for Abortion. If parental consent is required for a child to use a tanning booth or get her ears pierced, shouldn’t parents at least be notified if she’s getting an abortion? YES. Whether you’re pro-life or pro-choice, this should be the all-time no-brainer.

Proposition 74: Teacher Tenure. Do parents have a right to expect a higher level of competence before a teacher is granted life-time tenure? YES. This modest measure simply increases the teacher probation period from two years to five years.

Proposition 75: Public Employee Union Dues. Should public employees decide for themselves which candidates they will support with their own money? YES. This measure requires that before a public employee union can take money from that employee for political donations, it has to get the employee’s permission.

Proposition 76: State Spending. Should government live within its means? YES. This measure restores the authority that the governor of California had between 1939 and 1983 to make mid-year spending cuts whenever spending outpaces revenue without having to return to the legislature.

Proposition 77: Re-districting. Should voters choose their representatives in legislative districts that are drawn without regard to partisan advantage? YES. The most obvious conflict of interest in government is when politicians choose which voters will get to vote for them by drawing their own legislative district lines. This measure puts a stop to it.

Propositions 78 and 79: Prescription drug discounts. Do you want the same people who run the DMV to run your pharmacy? NO. These are rival measures, one supported by drug companies and the other by liberal activists – both of which purport to lower drug prices. What they really do is assure that one group of patients gets to pay higher prices to provide subsidized prices for others. There’s no such thing as a free Levitra.

Proposition 80. Electricity Regulation. Do you want the same people who run the DMV to run your electricity company? NO. This measure locks in monopoly control of your electricity by the bureaucratized utilities and forbids you from ever being able to shop around for the lowest-priced electricity available.

We need to create one big huge farm monopoly and have them submit five-year plans. Same with the department stores. We need one big chain -- lets call it Gum. They can bring in the very best products at the fairest prices. If they come up short on inventory people can just line up.

I hope you forgot the </sarcasm> tag here.

Just because there is good reason to have government control of some items, does not translate to all. You can build a grocery store and people will come or not. On the other hand try building an electric grid, and supply all the customers that want to buy your product. Impossible without government intervention.

My point was that there is no good reason to have government control of anything that the private sector can handle.

I was thinking today about how the FR anti-McClintock contingent has almost completely disappeared from the forum.

The anti-Arnold contingent was wrong, regardless of your wordplay.

I always look at McClintock's views before voting.

Just as Tom looks at Arnold's. ;)

Sorry Tom, but the last time I was promised a choice, I couldn't even by electricity at 18 cents a kw, while the City owned LA Light and power had a surplus to sell at 5 cents a kw.

Same here. Free market is great, but I don't want to depend on the same guys who price gasoline to furnish power for my respirator. Besides we had a great experience in Free-Market electricity a couple summers ago, Texas marketeers laughed in glee as our power stations burned....Burn Baby Burn, as I recall.

I saw Tom McClintock's name on these recommendations -- that's all I need to know. It's a crime he didn't have the support for Gov.

Only 32 posts since August on this thread about what McClintock thinks is why he was unelectable.

Also, he overstayed his welcome in the race before and was in the bridge burning business it seems.

IMO, could have been a contender, either lacks appeal or he could be one of the worst at self marketing this state has ever see.

I agree with his views on how to vote, and IMO what doesn't go our way we should re propose and bring to a vote in the next election so we keep the Democrats and Unions spending the 20% of a billion dollars on defense.

Please add me to the McClintock Ping list.

Wish I saw this thread prior to Wednesday morning. Although I was confused by a few of the props, I actually agreed with every one of his picks and voted that way.
