(CNN) -- Conservative religious broadcaster Pat Robertson apologized Wednesday for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez during Monday's broadcast of his "700 Club" program.
"Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement," he said in a written statement.

No it wasn't Pat Robertson, and although a Christian, Pat is no longer a minister. He no longer preaches. You should be better informed about those you're impugning.
No, thank you...
"Right you are, I don't contribute to swindlers"
Please. Document how Pat Robertson is a swindler.
I want to see if you know something the rest of
us don't.
Do you have any idea how many hundreds of millions of dollars Pat Robertson's Operation Blessing has donated top the poor in this country?
I agree with every word you wrote. I'm a Catholic but I recognize that Pat Robertson has more guts than most of the priests and bishops I know. I just wish he hadn't gotten mealey mouthed today...he should have stood behind his statement and let the MSM work themselves into a tizzy.
No doubt. I don't think I really believe my drivel against Pat, at least not all of it (and I've my own reasons for those beliefs). I apologize. I suppose I'm just angry that he has put his foot in it again, managing to put us on defensive positions, and maybe negating future actions similar to what he suggested. I do recognize how much good his organization, and most Christian organizations, have contributed.
Should not have apologized, the lefties are going to bit*h no matter what you do.
If Chavez dies of AIDS or the common cold, Bush and the CIA will be blamed anyway.
From his website:
"M. G. "Pat" Robertson has achieved national and international recognition as a religious broadcaster, philanthropist, educator, religious leader, businessman, and author. He is the founder and chairman of The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) Inc. . . .
Founded in 1960, CBN was the first Christian television network established in the United States. Today CBN is one of the world's largest television ministries . . ."
Sounds like a televangelist to me. And those guys are all the same. They are money grubbers, and make their living taking the last nickel from the people who can least afford to give it. And yes, CBN does have a "Be a CBN partner/monthly donor" program.
Not to mention the fact that my comment was a little tongue in cheek, anyway. I don't really care if it's accurate or not. But thanks for pointing it out.
Far from it this will keep on going like that little white bunny:
Dems "Remember when Pat said...and then lied and then took it back"
Right "Yeah we pretty quickly denounced..."
Dems: lalala can't hear you. Remember when Pat said...
infinity
It was clearly taken out of context...and hs still shouldn't have said what he did say. though frankly, i think Chavez should have had to apologize to our State Department first.
I agree!
I'd have WAYYY more respect for him if he stood by it!
Pray for W and Our Troops
Oh no far from it it was in context, he meant what he originally said (before he lied about what he said and then apologized for what he originaly said).
Not that getting rid of crazy Chavez is a bad thing. Should have just stuck to his guns, now he just looks like a loon.
Evidently the context is Chavez gave $1 million to Al Queda. Is it still a stupid statement?<<
I wasn't aware of that part of the story and if that is the context of the remark then I'd say no, it wasn't as stupid statement. And I'd support Pat's original position!
But all that aside, my point wasn't that I thought it was really a stupid statement, I just think it's ridiculous for us to be here on FreeRepublic doing the leftists dirty work for them by tearing down Pat Robertson.<<<
2003 NRO article.

"On January 5, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's former personal pilot dropped a bombshell that has been ignored by just about every major U.S. news organization: The Venezuelan president, according to the pilot, gave al Qaeda a substantial sum of money following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks."
By out of context, I mean that he clearly did not spontaneously call for Chavez's assassination. Chavez is the one that started that line. More than anything, Roberts just agreed.
I do like the last paragraph of the article, however:
He has suggested in the past that a meteor could strike Florida because of unofficial "Gay Days" at Disney World and that feminism caused women to kill their children, practice witchcraft and become lesbians.
The part about the meteor is definitely "out there" but the feminism part doesn't seem unreasonable.
Reasonable? He should put down the unlabled cigarettes, and take a deep breath of fresh clean air.
Anyone associating and singing the praises of former Liberian president Charles Taylor lacks my sympathy.
I don't feel bad for him, really.
