Statement by Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson

August 22nd, 2005

The Bush White House and its right wing allies are responding to Cindy Sheehan and the military families’ vigil in Central Texas in the same way that they always respond to bad news –by unleashing personal attacks and smears against her.

This White House never wants an open public discussion, and it certainly never wants to be told that it is wrong. It always tries to change the message by attacking the messenger.

They did it with former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill when he wrote a book that suggested that the White House used 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq.

They did it when Richard Clarke revealed that the White House ignored warnings about Bin Laden.

They did it in a most despicable way, as everybody now knows, when they revealed my wife’s identity as a CIA employee because they were unhappy when I spoke the truth and told the American people that President Bush’s claim was false concerning Niger’s giving uranium to Iraq, part of the trumped up rationale for our invasion.

So no one should be surprised that when these mothers and families who have lost loved ones in Iraq step up to question the President, the White House responds not with the respect due them, but with hateful attacks and smears. But enough is enough. Ours is a government of the people, by the people and for the people; and the people in the name of Cindy Sheehan are right in demanding accountability for the tragedy foisted upon our great nation by this administration. To smear her rather than hear her is un-American and undemocratic.

Joseph C. Wilson IV was U.S. Ambassador to Gabon from 1992-1995 and is an international business consultant.

After reading this I knew it would be followed by personal attacks and smears.

I spoke the truth and told the American people that President Bush’s claim was false concerning Niger’s giving uranium to Iraq

Bush's "claim," IIRC, was that British intelligence had found evidence that Iraq had sought uranium from a country (unnamed) in Africa.

But did NOT "claim" that Niger was "giving" uranium to Iraq.

And the subsequent congressional investigation found that that intelligence was probably correct -- despite Wilson's disinformation.

Can Wilson say anything without lying? Apparently not.

It's the REAL picture of the fake "hearing" Conyers had on the Downing Street Memo; they had to have it in a hallway or something because the Judiciary Committee wouldn't give them a room.

yellowcake, 500 lbs. found...

Wilson was told by the head African guy that someone was trying to buy, since he never did a report on paper... just orally... this tells you all you need to know.

Some will do anything to stay in the public eye.

He's lucky he and his wife are not in jail.

Judiciary GOP pulls the plug on Conyers 'forums'
By Albert Eisele and Jeff Dufour

If the Financial Services Committee is the best in the House when it comes to bipartisan comity, then the Judiciary Committee may well be the worst.

In December, ranking Democrat John Conyers (Mich.) began holding “forums” — gatherings with all the trappings of official hearings — after Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) refused to hold hearings on topics Conyers requested. The forums have been held in smaller committee rooms, often with C-SPAN coverage and formal witness lists.

In a sign of how far relationships on the committee have soured, majority staff recently announced a new policy to deny any request from a committee Democrat for the use of a committee hearing room.

Majority spokesman Jeff Lungren said the Republicans have given Democrats three opportunities to make clear that the forums are not official committee business. Nevertheless, Lungren said, in at least one case, members were addressing Conyers as “Mr. Chairman.”

“They were unwilling or unable to make those changes,” Lungren said. “At this point, if they want to hold these forums, they’ll have to find some other place to do it.”

Sean McLaughlin, deputy chief of staff for Sensenbrenner, recently wrote to a minority staffer in more pointed language.

“I’m sitting here watching your ‘forum’ on C-SPAN,” McLaughlin wrote. “Just to let you know, it was your last. Don’t bother asking [for a room] again.”

A committee source said committee Democrats are still planning to hold the forums when they find other available space.

The only statement made by the President about Cindy is to express sympathy for her loss. Wilson is lying again.

Do you believe (on Rush now WABC Radio), he is playing a soundbyte of Sheila Jackson Lee saying Sheehan is non-partisan?

Oh my.

Now he's playing the two counter bytes.

The Bush White House and its right wing allies are responding to Cindy Sheehan and the military families’ vigil in Central Texas in the same way that they always respond to bad news –by unleashing personal attacks and smears against her.

So when they got bad "news" from you in 2003, they unleashed personal attacks on Cindy Sheehan, even though they'd never heard of her before this year?

But seriously Mr. Wilson, aren't you now unleashing personal attacks and smears on the president?

This White House never wants an open public discussion...

In other words, Bush never walks out on the front lawn and holds still while you throw pies at him at point-blank range, as opposed to engaging in a substantive debate which would preclude you lying about your own reports.

...and it certainly never wants to be told that it is wrong.

Mr. Wilson, I'm sorry I forgot -- you by way of contrast REVEL in being told you're wrong. Who DOES like being told they're "wrong"? What a stupid statement, taking a universal aspect of human nature and portraying at as somehow unique to "this administration".

But apparently since you've been behaving like petulant little twirp since you were told -- with overwhelming evidence to back it up -- that YOU were not only wrong but flat-out lying about even your own reports, you don't like being told you're wrong a whole lot either. The evidence is overwhelming that Bush handles being contradicted with a lot more class than you do.

It always tries to change the message by attacking the messenger.

Okay, let's focus on that message then. "It's the fault of those subhuman Jews and Israelis and that puppet of Israel, Bush! America must lose! America must be defeated! Today Crawford, tomorrow the world -- where's my moustache!?"

If Pat Buchanan says something one-tenth this nasty, it's national news for months -- but if Sheehan says it and gets called on it, she's being "smeared".

You're right, Joe. Show's over, nothin' to see here folks! Move along!

They did it with former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill when he wrote a book that suggested that the White House used 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq.

Taking down Saddam had been the policy of this country long before Bush #43 was president and YOU of all people KNOW it. O'Neill was canned because he refused to go along with helping keep Bush's promise to cut taxes. Did Clinton have a treasury secretary strongly urging him against tax hikes? Hmmmm?

They did it when Richard Clarke revealed that the White House ignored warnings about Bin Laden.

This is true, it was the White House, but not under the current administration. Anyway, you and Richard Clarke are the kind of foreign policy pinheads who would have screamed out loud about racism and American bullying if Bush had attempted to DO ANYTHING ABOUT Bin Laden beyond sitting down with him and singing cumbaya.

They did it in a most despicable way, as everybody now knows, when they revealed my wife’s identity as a CIA employee...

No they didn't. Memo to anyone with a spouse who is a CIA "field agent" and concerned about said spouse's identity being made, even after she has been out of the field for more than 5 years: Keep a low profile YOURSELF and DO NOT GRANDSTAND, especially if your spouse has anything to do with why you would be in the spotlight on a certain issue because she will then become part of the story. Joe, you're a diplomat and therefore you have more than enough media savvy to know that reporters would have sniffed this out sooner or later. This shows reckless disregard for your wife's cover in that you were willing to sacrifice her safety on the alter of partisan politics by telling one lie after another -- OR...that you knew that she was no longer a field agent and safeguarding her identity was no longer as critical as it once was, which is why you and she have since posed for magazine covers and why you continue to insist on staying in the spotlight NOW.

...because they were unhappy when I spoke the truth and told the American people that President Bush’s claim was false concerning Niger’s giving uranium to Iraq, part of the trumped up rationale for our invasion.

STILL lying, huh, Joe? The president never claimed that Niger sold, gave or otherwise put in Iraq's possession even one microgram of yellowcake -- only that Iraq and Niger got together and TALKED about the possibility of doing so, something even you admit in your own report that you now want to sweep under the rug.

So no one should be surprised that when these mothers and families who have lost loved ones in Iraq step up to question the President, the White House responds not with the respect due them, but with hateful attacks and smears.

How much respect have you responded with to those who have stepped up to question YOU? And why is it all these things you and Ms. Sheehan are saying AREN'T personal attacks? And why is it that all the families who have lost loved ones in Iraq who SUPPORT the president don't count as far as you're concerned, even though the outnumber Sheehan & Co.?

But enough is enough.

Agreed. Now please get off the stage. Ours is a government of the people, by the people and for the people;

Wait a minute, Lincoln was a Republican and therefore evil so you can't use his words.

...and the people in the name of Cindy Sheehan are right in demanding accountability for the tragedy foisted upon our great nation by this administration.

...and that goes double for the people demanding accountability from Cindy Sheehan for the nutty things she is saying, and who VASTLY OUTNUMBER the Sheehan crowd.

To smear her rather than hear her is un-American and undemocratic.

It would be so, but nobody is smearing her. They're just recording her words, rewinding and pressing 'play'. DEAL with it...
