JMO, this guy like to hear himself write.

Take for example abortion, a partial birth abortion has been signed, much more than President Reagan signed.

Fiscal conservatism is long-dead. This guy needs to wake to the obvious truth.

Bainbridge makes some excellent points and raises good questions.

So, Republicans, how's that "limited government" thingie you promised us coming along, anyway? Hmmmmmmmmmm? What's your excuse now - the lack of a 100-seat Senate majority? You haven't even knocked off PBS, NEA, Welfare Farmer subsidies or "road" pork.

And I'm certainly not going to kneel before any professional politician who's willing to assault the First Amendment or dump more trillion-dollar boondoggles onto our backs.

When you look at the world through the AP prism, you get a distorted picture at best. You would think a 'law professor' would know that. His post is a little addled, and his reasoning shows little more than what you read in the everyday Cindy Sheehan press release, er .. ah sorry, AP wire report, about Iraq. I think he probably needs to get out and about more often. A law school perch surly can't help with your world view.

I know a few lawyers, friends, but they sure don't know which end is up. I definitely wouldn't consult them on a war strategy.

Idealist thinking never works in a fallen world. Now if he started preaching the Kingdom of God, he could never overstate how good everything will be.

Stinson makes some reasonable statements, but his criticism of the war with Iraq is over the top.

Our hand was pretty much forced there, given the ceasefire agreement Saddam had made, and his violations of that ceasefire.
Plus, everyone thought Saddam had WMD's, and he was in fact working on getting them. In addition, Saddam was hosting a number of well known terrorists and their organizations.
If anything, Bush should have made a stronger case about Saddam's terrorism ties and the WMD's less of an issue.

However, Pres. Bush has proved he is not a fiscal conservative. He has never vetoed a spending package, not even once.

As to abortion, the President has in fact help protect the unborn, by signing the ban on partial birth abortion.

However, last year the President also signed H.R. 4818, which authorized 288 million for family planning projects, (Title X funding) which also fully funded Planned Parenthood.

I'd say Bush has done well in some areas, and poorly in others. He definitely has done well in the WOT, that can't be denied. Establishing a democracy in the heart of Islamofacsist dictatorships? ...No small feat there. Quite comparable to Ronald Reagan bringing down the Berlin wall.

His biggest failures?
Lack of any kind of coherent immigration policy and any serious IRS/ progressive income tax reform...

-Regarding the IRS, and income tax reform, both Bush and the Republicans have done virtually nothing to revamp our overly complex tax system or defang the IRS.

Meanwhile, the well thought out Fair Tax has been waiting in the wings. It would bring both foreign and domestic investment back to the U.S, and it would also eliminate some incentive for hiring illegal aliens under the table.

His Presidency like most, is a mixed bag.

Always blame someone else to divert attention from your own failings. The sign of an ideology gone astray.

Some day so called conservatives will stop eating their young. No one is conservative enough. I think many are really libertarians who will never be satisfied, no matter what, since they can see little through the smoke.

Reagan, who we all worship, grew gov faster and larger than Bush. He did it on purpose, to get what he wanted done since he did not have congress. Bush had the same problem all through his first term.

Look at the difference between Bush's ability to shift congress to pubs and Reagan's. Look at the social legislation passed. Look at the shift in the judiciary. Bush has staying power in the war on terror. Reagan cut and ran in Lebanon. Bush has reduced the size of the debt during his term in spite of the war and gas prices. When history gives its true verdict, he will be honored as a decent, steadfast, President in the same hall as Reagan, Lincoln and the rest of the great ones.

Occasionally people here on FR sound like they should be at du: continually in bitch mode because the sand in the box is not arranged just the way they want it, so they won't play. Be happy you have a box to play in. Think Clinton when the dems made it a kitty litter box and we could only watch while they fouled it.

Is government smaller?

Have we hacked away at the nanny state?

Are the unborn any more protected?

Have we really set the stage for a durable conservative majority?

The answer to all 4 is "no"

How is the securing of our southern border coming along? Why is Bush promising the Palistinians hundreds of millions of our tax dollars, rewarding their murder of Israeli women and children over the years in establishing their non-existent "homeland" after every Arab country kicked out this scum? Inquiring minds want to know.

We've lost the willpower to get things done in this war.

Iraq will become an Islamist state with a false democracy because we just want a consitution done with so we can save political face.

We won't bomb terrorist camps in Syria because the U.N. might send us more nasty letters.

We continue to capitulate to Saudi Arabia.

Illegitimates ("Palestinians", as they are so called) are being rewarded for murder of Jews with land, and we're somehow proud of it.

Not to mention the domestic abuses:

Continuing interference by the federal government to expand and expand public education.

Not a single breath on border control but plenty of words on guest workers.

A federal budget that continues to be out of control.

The Department of Homeland Security adds another level of bureaucratic nonsense to defending our country.

Airport security federalization has still not been overturned.

The Supreme Court emminent domain case has gone vocally unopposed except for a very few exceptions.

I could go on forever. Where's Bush's thoughts on these issues in between touting guest worker programs and sugarcoating Iraq?

(BTW, you can hold off on the "terrorist supporter!" shrieks, because I was a whole-hearted supporter of the Iraq situation until a few days ago when this Islamist law crap started coming up, and Bush and Republicans are still acting like everything's all rosy. Congrats boys, let's just throw away the accomplishments of our fallen.)

Every conservative, in retrospect, should admit that the “Compassionate Conservatism” of Bush’s 2000 campaign was little more than dressing up the welfare state in soccer mom-friendly Republican talking points. We cannot therefore be surprised that Bush’s main domestic accomplishment, compared to a hypothetical Kerry or Gore administration, has been to increase the size of government at a slower rate than Democrats desired.

Agreed. But we were screamed at by the statist Bushbots on FR when we first brought this up. The GOP is mostly a joke. Where's the conservatism in big government?

A little less compassion, and a little more conservatism, please.

The Bush II era has not been a lot of things we could have wished for, but it has:

1-demonstrated the superiority of conservative tax policy, possibly forever banishing "tax cuts for the rich" from the liberal playbook, certainly rendering it useless.

2-No matter what one thinks of the decision to go into Iraq, the liberals have been exposed as weak on defense. No matter the outcome of Iraq, I will never be convinced we would be safer with Saddam Hussein still out there, with billions of dollars and motive to do us harm.

3-Bush has provided a stark contrast between Clinton's "government by poll watching" and government by conviction.

4-Bush has helped expose the MSM's pitifull predictive powers, their extreme negativism if not their bias.

5-Bush has seized moral high-ground from the Dems as relates to minorities, and helped to expose the lie that Republicans are bigoted. For the future, no small thing, this one.

6-The Bush II tenure has been scandal free, another stark contrast which bodes well for future Republican campaigns for any office.
