The Princeton Review's annual list of best colleges included lists of colleges most accepting of LGBT students and those least accepting. The Princeton Review's annual "The Best 361 Colleges" was released Tuesday, and authors included lists of the colleges that are most accepting of LGBT students and those that are not.
According to a survey taken by 110,000 students at 361 top colleges, the 10 schools that ranked the best in being accepting toward gay students are: New College of Florida, Sarasota; Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn.; Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass.; Eugene Lang College, New York City; Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass.; St. John's College, Annapolis, Md.; Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis.; Emerson College, Boston; and Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, Calif.
Robert Franek, the gay author of the ranking, told the PlanetOut Network the strength of the list comes from the fact that college students themselves are determining the ranking.
"I believe there is more validity with a qualitative survey than a quantitative survey," he said. "It's more important to see how students feel about their schools than how many resources a particular school provides."
Franek noted the schools that had the best reputation with LGBT students were ones that participated in LGBT college fairs, held in places such as New York, Boston and Washington, D.C.
He could not point out a common feature among the schools that demonstrated a low acceptance of the LGBT community. The 10 schools that ranked high on the list are: Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Va.; University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.; Baylor University, Waco, Texas; Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill.; Grove City College, Grove City, Pa.; University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Knoxville, Tenn.; Texas A & M University-College Station; College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.; Samford University, Birmingham, Ala.; and Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
Eliza Byard, the deputy executive director of the Gay, Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN), cautioned that the list is not necessarily comprehensive.
"Surveying students would give you one picture, but it would be one piece of the picture," she said. "I think the attitude of the students at these colleges would be an important factor, but prospective students should also think about what sort of policies these schools have in place."
"Prospective students should look for a combination of policies and student climate when they consider a college," Byard said. "I think the list is a good sign, and hopefully it will be helpful to young people making a decision about college."
"The Best 361 Colleges," the Princeton Review's annual ranking lists of top 20 colleges, went on sale Tuesday.

Hampden Sydney ping
I am surprised there aren't more CA names on the "friendly" list considering the student "culture" at public universities.
Did they not even bother to survey Bob Jones University, Liberty University or Brigham Young University?
The Church Lady says.....Is'nt that special?
Oops. Sorry. BYU did sneak into the list. Congrats to them.
Yup, that's the liberal mantra....it's all about how you feel!
We just don't realize how much of an issue until later.
The thing is to educate to protect children at a younger age. Not too young, I mean old enough to understand the attempt at indoctrination that some schools will make.
If only we had more heros like those guys.
Wellesley college has been lesbian friendly since the 1960s. While its primary purpose was to issue MRS degrees, those like Hillary Rodham not seeking an MRS degree apparently elected an "different route".
Didn't Hillary go to Wellesley?

St. John's College, Annapolis, is just across the street from the Naval Academy. Hmmmm.
New College is a public university in the state university system. Are any of the other colleges in the top 10 public universities?

A co-worker friend of mine has a daughter who insisted on attending Macalester, even though the parents tried to entice her interests elsewhere due to costs. Anyway, the girl got her way, and on the day they dropped her off at her assigned dorm room, her new roommate announced during her self-introduction that she was a lesbian.
Mom was pretty upset, but I thought it served them right. What the h*ll did they expect after giving in to her demands to attend a a pricey, leftist, communist institution like Macalester?
The University of Notre Dame is certainly trying to be on the most accepting list. They require homosexual indoctrination sessions for students and preach the homosexual agenda from the pulpit. Fortunately the students are much more conservative than the Brothers running the place.
I bet Smith has more lesbians than Wellesley.
Beaver U.
Samford University ping....go Bulldogs.
The authority cited most by the Founding fathers -back when
our public education was rightly under the domain of the local church teaches "Anyone who breaks the least of these
commandments, and teaches others to do likewise will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven ;but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great
in the kingdom of heaven." I recall as well what the Scriptures teach of those Gay and Lesbian friendly cities
like Sodom and Gomorrah, and Gibeah. Americans once understood how unnatural and dangerous this unspeakable
lifestyle choice is -but we have rejected God and stand before Him with our fist raised in our foolish defiance.
The least of these listed colleges and Universities are the
greatest in our system of higher ? education.
