CNN President Jonathan Klein implies ratings news leader FOXNEWS is mired in coverage of "meaningless nonsense," claiming: "Fourteen Americans dead, and they have Natalee Holloway on," Klein says. "And they're supposedly America's news channel."
"It's easy and it's brainless," Klein charges in a telephone interview set for publication at the NEW YORK TIMES, explaining why cable news outlets had gravitated to the Aruba story. "They're looking for an ongoing drama" along the lines of the NBC crime show "Law & Order," he said, adding, "Except 'Law & Order' doesn't do the same plot every night."
"There are an awful lot of things you can cover if you don't have people tied up with this meaningless nonsense," Klein says.
In early July, Klein pulled CNN's correspondent out of Aruba and dropped the subject from most CNN shows in the absence of new developments.
"If Jon performed as well as he talks, he wouldn't have to explain his network's dismal ratings," says Irena Briganti, a spokeswoman for FOXNEWS. "We have trounced him on every breaking news story from the London bombings and last week's events in Gaza."
Impacting...
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Like some cheese with that whine Jonathan?
LOL---no, his show is 3 hours...I was there about 3 minutes...but you gave me a good "diet tip"...!
Oh I think the alphabet channels are trash - never watch them. But I do like the TW Movie Classics - watched a couple of Maureen O'Hara movies this w/e. Something about watching her, John Wayne, James Steward, etc. movies that are comforting in a way. Innocent times, I guess.
You wouldn't believe how carried away Fox News has been with the Natalee Holloway story... it has completely taken over Greta's show (which is pretty much expected), but has suprisingly taken over much of Hannity & Colmes and part of O'Reilly's show also. On MSNBC, Former Congressan Joe Scarborough has also sold out in search of ratings... everytime I tune in, it's all about Natalee, although there seems to be no news in the case. Just interviews with family members and endless discussion on why and how she may have disappeared.
My husband and I have been disgusted with FNC's coverage in general since the Natalee story got started. And along with Natalee is the story of the guy who disappeared off some cruise ship on his honeymoon, and now there's a beautiful young model missing in Ohio. Yeesh... Fortunately shows such as Brit Hume's Special Report, Beltway Boys and a couple of others have maintained their integrity.
YOU are just the person I have been looking for...
Do you know if Linda Vester is still at Fox?..I haven't seen her on the Noon show in months it seems like.
I hope she isn't gone, and that she is alright...she is one of my favorites...
Yes, I saw that segment on H&C with Mary Matalin... it was good, the way H&C used to be all of the time. Then it was immediately back to breathless coverage of the Natalee mystery, then onto the new mystery of the missing model in Ohio... :-(
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
Greta's all over Holloway like Giraldo was all over O.J. If I remember that went on for over a year. I've completely quit watching her show and still, to this day, cannot stomach Giraldo.
I like Linda Vester, too. Now that you mention it, I don't think I've seen her in awhile. I have no inside of knowledge of Fox News, though... I just run the FNC ping list. I'll ask some other FoxFans if they've heard where she is. I suspect (and hope) she's just on vacation?
Well, he does have a point, but CNN carries the same type of stuff. However, not in doses that Greta does. It's not that Fox isn't largely pap--that's inarguable--but that they all are.
"I will confess that lately I am tuning in MSNBC for news instead of FOX."
Who needs cable news when you have FR!!!! :)
I've also quit watching Greta's show since this Natalee stuff started (and pretty much during the Scott Peterson trial). It's a shame... Greta was excellent when interviewing individuals like Bill Gertz, Mansoor Ijaz, Fmr. Ambassador Marc Ginsberg, "her generals", etc. She's gone completely tabloid... :-(
You're right, but last night when I scanned the news channels (perhaps at the wrong time?) every channel had a long feature on Olivia Neutron-Bomb.
Please direct your replies to me or Txsleuth. Thanks in advance.
I do think they have way too much Natalie.
I agree with you 100%.
You're right. I've had enough. Back to HGTV again...
