CABLE BATTLE: CNN HEAD CALLS FOXNEWS COVERAGE 'MEANINGLESS NONSENSE'
Drudge Report ^ | 8/23/05 | Matt Drudge

Posted on 08/23/2005 5:58:14 PM PDT by wagglebee

CNN President Jonathan Klein implies ratings news leader FOXNEWS is mired in coverage of "meaningless nonsense," claiming: "Fourteen Americans dead, and they have Natalee Holloway on," Klein says. "And they're supposedly America's news channel."

"It's easy and it's brainless," Klein charges in a telephone interview set for publication at the NEW YORK TIMES, explaining why cable news outlets had gravitated to the Aruba story. "They're looking for an ongoing drama" along the lines of the NBC crime show "Law & Order," he said, adding, "Except 'Law & Order' doesn't do the same plot every night."

"There are an awful lot of things you can cover if you don't have people tied up with this meaningless nonsense," Klein says.

In early July, Klein pulled CNN's correspondent out of Aruba and dropped the subject from most CNN shows in the absence of new developments.

"If Jon performed as well as he talks, he wouldn't have to explain his network's dismal ratings," says Irena Briganti, a spokeswoman for FOXNEWS. "We have trounced him on every breaking news story from the London bombings and last week's events in Gaza."

Impacting...

And I say thank heavens for Brit! He is by far the best on FNC, indeed on any channel. Its so good to see him back from vacation. I flick to CNN occasionally, and always end up sending them an email about their "errors". They just don't get it.

More likely, they're just pissed off because they've been castrated!

I'm taking the night off from the "news" and enjoying "Good Eats" while waiting for "South Park" to come on.

I try to do this at least a couple of times a week. My blood pressure sometimes rises, but it's after cooking a new spicy recipe or laughing like crazy when Cartman lampoons "some dried up old lady with a big nose". (Barbra Streisand)

I couldn't agree more with you To add, if FOXNEWS would get off this Natalee story already and use this time between "The next big story" to cover some of the good news coming out of Iraq that nobody is getting to hear, you'd have something then. Why are news channels so morbid in thier desire to bring us only the bad news? Why not broadcast something positive for a change? You'd be brightening peoples day, and show some real patriotism to are men and women in uniform and allow thier stories to be told.

How about everyone using a little common sense. As far as FOX is concerned, O'Rielly only covers the Holloway case with one little segment to update what is going on there. The problem is with Greta and Hannity shows. They are way overboard and getting boring as hell. I simply change channels when that comes on. Same with F.R. I just don't read any of the "Holloway" threads. All of you can do the same. Quit bitchen and just change channels. You are starting to sound like a bunch of Liberals.

"Fourteen Americans dead, and they have Natalee Holloway on," Klein says. "And they're supposedly America's news channel."

Klein would be decrying a dozen dead on the beaches of Normandy.

"Fourteen Americans dead, and they have Natalee Holloway on"

Some of our troops have died doing what they were trained to do and I hate it that they had to die. Hopefully, there will be no repeat of the 9-11 horrors thanks to our guys.
People die,CNN.

August 2005 Disasters
Aug. 2, Toronto, Canada: An Air France Airbus A340, Flight 358, skidded off the runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport in heavy thunderstorms. All of the 309 aboard managed to escape from the aircraft before it went up in flames.
Aug. 5–9, Pomeroy, Wash: Wildfires burned 37,000 acres in southeastern Washington, destroying at least 100 homes and cabins.
Aug. 6, Palermo, Italy: An ATR-72 aircraft on a charter flight from Bari to Palermo crashed in the Mediterranean, killing at least 13 of the 39 aboard.
Aug. 14, Athens, Greece: Helios Airways Flight 522, a Boeing 737, en route from Cyprus to Athens crashed into a mountain killing all 121 on board. The suspected cause of the accident was a catastrophic loss of cabin pressure.
Aug. 16, western Venezuela: a West Caribbean Airways charter flight, an MD-82, en route from Panama to Martinique crashed in remote western Venezuela, killing all 160 on board.
Aug. 16, northern Japan: a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook northern Japan, injuring at least 59 people, and creating small tsunami waves on a nearby coast.
Aug. 12, off the coast of Columbia: a boat overloaded with illegal Ecuadorean immigrants sank more than 200 miles off the coast of Columbia, killing at least 94 people.

You can't have it both ways. You either want the government to step in and regulate what the TV channels can broadcast.

I know, you probably want them to self-regulate. But that is not realistic. I have Fox News NewsCorp in my stock portfolio. They give the viewing public what they want. Even if you think it's trash.

CNN has 3 basic problems. First, they can't tell a neutral and fact-filled story...it must be slanted. Second, their "experts" to come on at various times to explain the issues to viewers...aren't all experts, and you often get a very clouded view of the actual event. And third...they know they have the lefty liberal viewer in their backpocket but they desperately need the other viewers to attract major advertising dollars...and they can't seem to figure out how to fix this issue.

And as for Larry...its just about time to retire and hang up the hat. Even CNN probably admits that now. I'd bring in Connie Chung and Maury to do a tag-team effort.

Go for it. You either want the government to regulate TV content or allow the channels to go for ratings. BUY THE STOCK! Whether you listen or not. Go capitalist for a change!

I haven't watched much news lately but it does seem as tho every time I try to find some all I get from fox is the NH story. It has become old at this point just rehashing the same old story.
