FEDS VOW TO GET TOUGH ON ILLEGALS Tue Aug 23 2005 17:15:30 ET

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.

"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.

The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

It would be nice if the Feds would do their job.

It makes me very nervous that there is all this gab to calm the folks just when citizen groups are proving so effective and cost efficient.

A barrier is proactive, cost efficient. All other measures are retroactive.

With the Minutemen not only prohibiting Illegals from crossing but cleaning up the mountains of garbage left by these illegal invaders, I can think of no better stewards of a program to assist border property owners in upgrading their fences. I for one would donate, yet more, towards such a cause.

If by the "John and Ken" solution do you mean the horrid Edwards/Kerry ticket?

Excuse me, did I write that? No, I was talking about their campaign against Dreier last fall, "taking out" one---JUST ONE---Republican from the California delegation so that the immigration issue would finally get the RNC's attention, and I specifically stated I wasn't prepared to do something like that...yet. (Anyway, I don't remember John and Ken coming out in support of Kerry/Edwards last year, do you?)

BTW, I don't appreciate people taking my posts and distorting them: that's bayourod's job. I haven't posted in favor of Kerry or Edwards ever on this forum and you're not about to make it look like I'm doing so now.

Besides, I later posted you to support the candidacy of Jim Gilchrist, for the Republican ticket, for Chris Cox's seat. What do you say about that?

The minutemen seem to be doing the most good.

Yes. They've finally brought it to the forefront. However, it is far too little, way too late. People around me are becoming angry, but there is NOTHING they can do about it. It is as if the Medes and Persians have marched under the gates and are at the castle door and NOW someone wants to do something about it. Sorry, it won't work.

The Bush team has as much credibility on border issues as Clinton does on chastity.

Ouch. The truth hurts.

According to Tom Tancredo and Bay Buchanan, both of whom I heard in person today, neither the Admin nor the Congress is doing anything at all about stopping illegal immigration. In fact they are doing all they can to stop any efforts to stop it. Tancredo is just great as a speaker and so was Bay.

Tom told of his trip to Mexico to meet with high government officials including the then head of "migration" a cabinet level post. The man told Tom that his job is to make it easier for Mexicans to cross the border illegally. In answer to Tom's remark about our sovereignty, the guy said, "there are not two nations, but only one 'region'." Tom was mortified.

Another problem that Tom found in his own CO district when he attended the opening of a new high school and spoke at the event. He asked the students, all from affluent families, how many of them believed that they live in the greatest country in the world. Of the 250 students in the assembly, only 10-12 raised their hands and did so tentatively, looking towards their teachers as if to get "permission" to say such a non-PC thing as that. The kids learn anti-Americanism and multi-culturism starting in grade school and it gets worse as they go along.

I have photos of the event today and will email them to anyone who wishes to post them on FR. I'm not sure how to post photos on FR, being semi-literate computerwise.
