FORMER Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib has been stabbed near his Sydney home.
Mr Habib was walking home with his wife Maha at Guildford in the early hours of yesterday morning when he was bashed on the head from behind and stabbed in the stomach, Channel 7 reported tonight.
Mr Habib, who was not seriously injured, believed he had been targeted.
Lifting his top to show a 6cm cut over his stomach, Mr Habib said he thought a man had come at him from the front with a knife.
"He tried to stab me so many times and he keep going ... he got me in my left side," he told Seven.
Mrs Habib believed her husband had been attacked by three men dressed in black with hoods covering their heads.
"They said something like `Ah, that should keep you quiet'.," she said.
"What's meant by that?"
Mr Habib told Seven the men could have murdered him but he believed they wanted only to menace him.
"They hit me in my head from the back. If you want to kill me you can hit me from the back with knife, hit me in my kidney with knife and that's it, finish," he said.
Mr Habib, who was detained at the US Guantanamo Bay facility in Cuba, with fellow Australian David Hicks, was released in January this year after spending more than three years in detention.
He was arrested in Pakistan in late 2001 on suspicion of terrorist activities.
He claims he was also taken to Egypt and tortured between November 2001 and February 2002.
Without naming Mr Habib, police released a statement today saying they were seeking public help following the stabbing.
Police said a 50-year-old man and his wife were walking in a park beside Guildford Road when they were confronted by two or three men wearing hats and hooded jackets.
"The man was allegedly stabbed and hit on the back of the head by the men," the statement said.
"The alleged attackers were last seen by the man and his wife running west into Eve Street.
"The victim's wife contacted police who conducted a lengthy search for the alleged offenders.
"A police dog was also utilised without success."
This has such a fishy smell to it.
"hit me in my kidney with knife and that's it, finish"
That's it, the knife in the kidney. Does it every time.
Sounds like a Morton Downey Jr. situation.
Why on Earth did the Aussies let this guy walk freely in their country anyway?
Because as far as anyone can tell, he hasn't committed any crimes under Australian law - so once the US chose to release him from Guantanamo Bay, there's not much that can be done.
Habib -- victim of random street crime. In the immortal words of Dan Rather, "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"
Maybe to lead them to his former compatriots. Maybe that's why they stabbed him.
"A knife...that ain't a knife! This is a knife!"
Crocodile Dundee Ping
Not to quibble, but I think Dan Rather's attacker said that. Although, the attacker of my attacker is my friend. ;-)
He would have been so much safer if the Yanks had not released him. Perhaps he might like to migrate to a safer place - I suggest Toronto.
