Yes, there seemed to be an element of PC, but other criteria seemed more objective. A whole range of elements were considered, apparently, to make up the rankings. (I don't vouch for them, btw. I report, you decide.)
Now if you look at the extended list of all 331 cities, Abilene, TX is #32. That is pretty darned good. And I can assure you, Abilene, TX is as un-PC as it is possible to get.
Of course, the top ten are the ones that get ALL the publicity, so it's a wash, I would say.
It's a subjective ranking in a magazine. It's not a big deal.
Regardless, while forced diversity is terrible, natural diversity is something that makes living in a major city very pleasurable.
It is nice to go to an event and not just be surrounded by a bunch of white people. We, like most larger cities, have an Asia town which is incredible. The food is incredible and the people are the truly interesting.
The various cultural festivals are also very enjoyable and really add some spice to life.
Colorado Springs is ranked 18th. I live in the Springs. Great place to call home. At #20 is Pueblo. I would never call Pueblo the 20th best place to live in America. Never! I also find the #7 ranking of Atlanta to be an outrage.

Lot's of fallacies there. By your logic, I could say that Atlanta has "almost" the same shopping and dining options as New York or Los Angeles and I'd be correct.
The fact is no where close. YOu like it and that is fine - we all have our likes and dislikes. What is silly is when a person has to make up things to make their home sound better.

If diversity is a criteria then it ruins it for me...sorry...I could care less if there are not enough minorities.....it's laughable.
Atlanta has it's fine points...like Jeff mentioned but the areas to the south of downtown are almost Detroit like in crime and perma-decay.

And all these grossly overpriced Kali environs....who can afford to live in Santa Barabra now.
I used to be serious with a woman from Anson. Abilene (and Buff Gap) are fine.
I agree on Charlottesville though....and of the three valleys of VA are fine by me.
ROFL!!!! Does anyone realize that all of the "best places to live" are cities? Now, don't get me wrong, I am THANKFUL for lists such as this. It keeps the city folks where they belong, in the city. I'd sure like to know what criteria Sperling uses in deciding which is the "best place. I highly doubt Sperling's criteria would match mine. As for me, I live in one of the truly best places, but I'm not going to say where. I don't want anyone moving into my neck-of-the-woods. LOL

Were it not for the gun laws and the high taxes, NYC would be the PERFECT place. Everything from high rises to green space. The only thing NYC doesn't have (yet) is a Wal Mart (THANK GOD!).
Atlanta, along with every other large city is not my idea of a "best place to live". And Atlanta's crime rate is horrible!
You are correct. The options and energy of New York is just incomparable to any other city.

But then again, some folks feel pretty strongly "fer or agin" certain places...

Like any other major city, if you don't live in the high crime areas, the crime rate is very low. And also like any other major city, the high crime areas are relatively small and very much isolated from the rest of the city.
