Televangelist calls for Chavez' death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Look, I've seen the guy operate over the years. I know what he is and this latest goofiness has been confirmed. As far as red meat is concerned, no thank you, I'm already full from being fed a steady diet of sanctimonious crap from Robertson, et al.

The truth is someone does need to whack Chavez. Chavez is a lunatic who controls approximately 3.5% of the worlds oil supply. He is very dangerous, and the world would be a much safer place if he were dead.

When you get down to where the rubber meets the road.....You are correct.

FWIW-

"That's thrown around as if Jesus was a weak man."

So I guess Jesus would just grab an Uzi and take of business?

I don't think Jesus Christ approves of Robertson's comments and because He doesn't, I don't.
You are sounding mighty judgemental there.

Who Would Jesus Assassinate?

How do you misinterpret as anything but an approval to assassinate him?

Would smiting be considered a form of assassination?

Where would he get an idea like that?

If everyone which is so upset about what Pat stated, could be as infuriated by Hugo Chavez' ongoing threats to America - Hugo would no longer be a threat.

I have seen folks call for the death of Osama bin Ladin and a few others. But maybe I was hallucinating.

My respect for Pat Robertson just went up! He was the one who lead me to Christ so I'll always have a fondness for the man.

"Pat Robertson is America's version of the Ayatollah Khomeini. He needs to be sent to Illinois to run for a US Senate seat get embarrassed so that we can all laugh him out of public life. The only 'useful' purpose Reverend Nut-job seems to serve is the occasional appearance on CNN to make Christian Conservatives look like Neanderthals. It's a genuine shame that decent and honorable Americans have their good name trashed by being associated with Pat Robertson."

You hit the nail on the head. But isn't being for tax-cuts enough to convince everyone that Robertson really makes sense. Besides killing in the name of old-time religion is very in these days.

Hey howlin, so we're back to this thread since apparently I can't "carry" an argument to another. This is where your original attacks on me started, so I'll make my point here. You lectured me on this thread here:

----
The "thinking" expressed by Utopia is that -- at least on THIS site -- we don't openly call for ANYONE's death.

If you feel like you need to say stuff like that, you're at the wrong web site.

----

Now, I've compiled a list of people who have openly called for Chavez's death RIGHT HERE in THIS thread. Their posts and names are below. Will you lecture them in the same manner? After all, we want to remain consistent, dont we?

To: Stellar Dendrite

Ditto!!!!!!!!! Serious as a heart attack.

I endorsed it, but not in religious terms. I said that I didn't care who said it, it is about time. Actually, I think that it's past time. Chavez should have been eliminated before Bush even took office.

I have no interest in defending Pat Robertson as I think he's a kook--and certainly not representative Christianity, as far as I'm concerned. However, he is absolutely right about Hugo Chavez being a danger. He's a marxist nutball who hates the US and will end up causing us no end of trouble. It irks me that some FReepers are so quick to jump on the "idiot Christians/poor Chavez" bandwagon. That was exactly the response this story was meant to elicit. It's troubling how many of you had the "correct" reaction without even thinking twice.

I call for the assasination of all terrorists and do so proudly.

I am so impressed to hear of your brave, heroic and superior moral stance that would never hurt a fly.

Chavez is a Castro clone who has and will MURDER innocent people at the drop of a hat just as Castro would and DID.

The left loves old Hugo Chavez (just like Fidel Castro) because he is murdering for the politically correct reasons.

He needs to be taken out now.

What you end up with is an argument about what is Good and what is Evil. Just like it has always been.

I completely agree with Robertson on this issue and I hope we actually do it soon.

I agree. Chavez is a first class troublemaker to US interests. And while we're at it, knock off Fidel too.

Now the press will run with this and turn a decent man into a demon.

Only too true. I saw one Bill Snider/Snyder -whatever, on CNN at 1pm EST. He is a round faced astute man and is like Canadian liberal "newsman" Craig Oliver.

Oh me oh my. That reaming off of platitudes. The feigned Peter Jenningsonian professional laid back delivery, coupled with the requisite tinge of modified horror. Snider/Snyder is toeing the political line. They have told him likely this. "Go for it Bill, hurt Bush any way you can". All put on. Still as that erudite man would say- COURAGE.

I have followed the lifes span of "this just in" for many more years than I care to remember. The key word is Shelf life. Depending on the damage these flunkeys think it is doing it will wax and wane. I give it five days at best- hope I am right.

How would I be making a fool out of myself? Your personal attacks are not very becoming.

The moderator told me not to continue in that thread, so I came back to this one. I'm playing by the rules, because I'm back in this thread.

Why when the debate gets difficult, do you call for a Moderator?
