Moscow -- It may no longer be a crime to be homosexual in Russia, but as the would-be organizers of Moscow's first gay pride parade are discovering, celebrating that fact is another matter.
A group of gay activists announced in late July that they were planning to hold the parade on May 27, 2006 -- the anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in Russia in 1993. Before they could even apply for a permit, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov declared he would never give permission for such an event.
"If I receive such a request, I will refuse," Luzhkov told reporters. "The capital's inhabitants would be categorically opposed to such a project."
Organizers are pledging to fight the authorities in court -- including the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France -- if they are refused a permit.
"This is a test of the Russian authorities, to see if they are truly democratic and respect minority rights," says organizer Nikolai Alexeyev, director of the www.gayrussia.ru Web site. "The law is on our side. The constitution guarantees the right to freely assemble, so I don't see how the mayor can just say no to such an event."
Yet even organizers admit the chances the parade will be held are slim.

"Love Parade" is too ambiguous. If they can call it "Gay Pride", why can't we call something "Straight Pride" without being labeled as bigots and haters?

From what I can see, they are not pride parades.
They are exhibitionist parades for people who have sexual issues. Marching in thongs and makeup gives them a thrill. It's something they really, really want to do.
I am always amazed at the number of people who bring children to them.
Years ago they performed the "Wilkommen" song, part of "Caberet" the musical at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It was SO inappropriate- women in torn clothes, acting sexual. My brother, who was watching with me, didn't understand why I sent my kids out of the room.

Missed this one from a couple of days ago. It seems that people in Eastern Europe are not knuckling under to the pressure of "gay" rights - and note also that the organizers of the "Gay Pride Parade" may appeal to the EU court (otherwise known as the "eeeeyuuu Court").
