Pope Talks Tough About Terrorism and Islam
LA Times ^ | 8/20/05 | TRACY WILKINSON

COLOGNE, Germany -- Pope Benedict XVI chose unusually tough language Saturday to tell Muslim leaders they must work harder to combat terrorism and steer youth away from "the darkness of a new barbarism."

On the third day of his first foreign trip as pope, Benedict met with 10 representatives of Germany's growing Muslim community as part of his effort to reach out to other faiths. But he quickly dispensed with the diplomatic niceties and zeroed in on the "cruel fanaticism" of terrorism and the responsibility of religious leaders and educators to prevent it.

"You guide Muslim believers and train them in the Islamic faith," he told his select audience, who traveled to the Cologne archdiocese to meet the pope. "Teaching is the vehicle through which ideas and convictions are transmitted. . . . There is no room for apathy and disengagement, and even less for partiality and sectarianism."

Benedict condemned terrorism as a "perverse and cruel decision" that "shows contempt for the sacred right to life and undermines the very foundations of all civil society." Terrorists, he said, falsely use religion to poison relations between all religions.

Benedict's meeting with the Muslims was held at the Cologne archdiocese and journalists were barred from attending, in contrast to the pope's high-profile visit to a synagogue the day before that was televised live.

His pointed remarks were made to a community with whom his relations were already strained and marked a departure from his exceedingly tolerant predecessor. As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the pope had been quite critical of Islam in a number of his writings. Before and after becoming pope in April, he voiced alarm at the loss of Christian identity, especially in Europe, sacrificed to a modern multiculturalism that accommodates, among other diversities, Islam..."

"No one would blame Christianity for terror acts committed by a Christian. But Muslims are always blamed," he said. "What else can we do to show the world that we are not born terrorists?"

Quit whining!

Affirm the Pope's message!

Condemn those who conduct terror in the name of Islam!

Any more questions?

"Honestly, that's not exactly a new idea. I guess the Pope just had to say it before it was official, eh?"

He, (without an army), faced the Muslim leaders and condemned terrorism. He told them that the ideals and concepts of terrorism came from Islamic teachers, indicating very strongly that terrorism is NOT something that simply came about all on its own, but comes from within Islamic teachings.

This was a very bold statement by the Pope. Contrast that with our own President Bush, who does nothing but heap praise upon Islam, calling it the 'religion of peace' and the like. He would not dare to tell a panel of mainstream Muslim leaders that it is sometimes their teachings that help promote terrorism. He is not able to see that terrorism is the child of Islam, claiming again and again that it is something very separate, some disconnected radical offshoot. Conversely, the Pope linked terrorism to 'mainstream' Islam, (perhaps subtley, but he did it).

And being Muslim, they will listen to the Pope. I think we ought to have another crusade.

I agree. What else has been going on with the Muslims for the last 1200 flippin years? If I were in the WH, there would be MAJOR radical changes. A lot of silicon glass in the middle east. Our Air Force guys would be having a lot of fun with their new toys. (wish I could be there to enjoy the action).

The LATimes preferred Pope John Paul II, since he was 'exceedingly tolerant'. It looks as if the present Pope has decided endless tolerance will beget more violence and the death of many more innocents. God can't be in favor of that.

JPII was tolerant because he believed in nonviolence. Violence begets violence he said. Well, Kenny Rogers once said "sometimes you have to fight when you're a man." I think Pope Benedict XVI gets that message. Maybe a new crusade is at hand... Hopefully then W will bring the might of our government behind fighting the root of the problem, not just the symptoms, towards a cumulative conclusion.

You da Pope baby! Speak truth to barbarism! They won't listen, but at least they've been warned.

All I can say is the Holy Spirit certainly gave perfect guidance to the cardinals when they chose Benedict!

I knew Josef Cardinal Ratzinger had the Prophets gift of calling them as the Holy Spirit directed him, but I had no idea he was such a sweet loveable man until he became pope, after all the dreck that was said about him. The youngsters think that JPII invented the loveable Pope, but I'm a bit older and I loved Paul and John as well. I'm only learning how loveable Pius XII was as well.

The current Pope has decided that exceeding tolerance will result in a new Dark Age and I can't say that I disagree with him.

I don't think that BXI is calling for violence, just standing up and calling a spade a spade. And a renewed call to faith.

From the increasing fanacticism of their posts, it appears that the ones who would prefer a World-wide religious war are becoming more and more desperate.

Isn't that amazing that we get news like "Al-Zarqawi Tactics Could Be Alienating Supporters" at the same time - almost as if they are taking orders from the same leaders to ratchet up the rhetoric ....

Huh? God seems quite fond of the death of innocents.
