HaPPy TRaiLs, Hunter!

Workers put the finishing touches on a memorial to 'gonzo' journalist Hunter S. Thompson near his home at the Owl Farm in Woody Creek, Colo., on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005. Family and friends are to gather at the site Saturday night to pay tribute to Thompson. His ashes are to be spread by a fireworks projectile during the event. Thompson shot himself to death six months ago on Feb. 20 at age 67. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

For those who visit Lucianne, Hunter was "Catalina" on Lucianne.

Should have done this while he was still alive. It would have meant more to me.

I bet that there maybe might perhaps be about 2 1/2 people here that give a flying 'f about Hunter Thompson's ashes. I only hope they don't sift down on us here in Dallas.

A fitting memorial to Thompson - struggling for attention in death, just as he struggled for attention in life.

"Two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls... and I was still bored to tears after five minutes with this guy..."

Doesn't this violate environmental regulations?

There was a time, back when I was a student at Berkeley (no, I wasn't mugged), when I appreciated the 'boldness' of Thompson's style. His Hell's Angels was the first that became an early hit in Berkeley. One of the most memorable scenes was when, after having been "imbedded" within the Oakland chapter's ranks as an author ("I just want to write your guys' story---okay"), they caught on to his clownish and deceptive ways and beat the living shit out of him.

What was remarkable about all that was that, then, Hunter admitted in his book that he was an "asshole."

Sadly, I believe the extent of that blast may be the closest to heaven he ever gets.

To read about this is sad, in a way. I always wonder when people, who have lived lives with little or no acknowledgment or respect for God, devise plans that seem to be one last "in your face" to be carried out after their deaths. I wonder if their perspectives from their new vantage points in the after life wouldn't cause them to want to tell their friends not to carry out those plans because they aren't so clever or humorous, or fitting, after all.

I knew a guy who told his "old lady" to put a Bible in his casket at the cemetery before they buried him. She did. The Bible had been hollowed out and had a bottle of whiskey inside it. They had laughed together with their friends about it before he died. If they were laughing at the cemetery, I didn't see them. I thought it was very sad.
