Chance to win.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Yes, PETA might be extreme at times (they once threw a bucket of red paint, symbolizing blood, on Joan Rivers when she was wearing a real fur coat) while on their quest to defend the rights of animals and herald vegetarianism. But they also do plenty of good for worthy causes.
Some of their biggest celeb supporters include Paul McCartney, Alec Baldwin, Bea Arthur, the Dali Lama, Josh Hartnett, Pamela Anderson, Moby, Christina Applegate and Charlize Theron.
I have a beautiful PETA 25th anniversary gift basket valued at $75 to present to one lucky reader. Among the goodies included, PETA's "Chew on This: A Vegetarian Starter Kit," featuring 15 recipes with color photos. It also has plenty of tidbits and advice from celebs.
I particularly like Conan O'Brien's quip about ample Star Jones: "PETA has named Star on their 'worst-dressed celebrity of the year' because she wears too much fur. Apparently, her one fur coat wiped out three species."
The first reader to call in or e-mail me at my contact info below answering this fun contest question wins the basket. REMEMBER, include your name, town you live in and telephone number. The contest is not open to Times employees and their immediate families.
Question: In 1995, Mary Tyler Moore made headlines trying to buy a 16-pound lobster named Spike on display in a lobby tank at a trendy Malibu restaurant. With the help of PETA, she offered $1,000 and planned to set it free. Rush Limbaugh heard about it, and made a counter offer to buy it to eat!
* How old was the lobster AND how much did Limbaugh offer?
Good luck.
maybe I'll send them a picture of some big meat titled, "Chew on This". Hahahaha (blush)
That's all I need to know about them!
"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is celebrating its 25th anniversary."
I am going to celebrate PETA's 25th tonight by lighting up the barbeque and grilling some hamburgers and hot dogs!
Is there any way to get rid of this racist, worthless tax free company? They have a budget of 27-29 million dollars, and they kill off 80% of the animals they "rescue". Also, they support eco-terrorists, including members who advocate killing scientists.
Are they dumb, naive or pushing an agenda?
Yes.
Mmmmmmm hippopotamus
I've heard it tastes like chicken.
is that you with the Hippo?
My God you would need an anti-Tank round to take that thing down!!
:)

"Rush Limbaugh, the radio talk show host, heard about this and offered two thousand dollars for Spike and offered to eat him."
I never heard how this story ended. Whatever happened to the lobster?
Steak is DEFINITELY on the menu tonight!;)
My wife comes from a hunting family in West Virginia... consequently, there is always a good supply of deer meat in the freezer. I think maybe a couple of nice lean slices of Bambi on the BBQ is in order.
INTREP
Uh ... sure they do.
And David Berkowitz was an altar boy.
