I know his politics. But I also know his early writing and have fond memories of it. Plus I guess many rural Freepers with plots of land and many firearms will appreciate the send-off he's getting. Can't get blasted out of a cannon in the city!

I find him slightly interesting, but no more so than any other dirty old man.

The monument, in the form of a clenched fist made symmetrical by the addition of a second thumb, is modelled on Thompson's gonzo logo. Not quite, it's a two thumbed fist clutching a peyote button.

Thompson would have liked be called weird.
To: cambridge
Self-indulgent, narcissistic egotism and exaggerated sense of self-importance even after death.
I don't like Johnny Depp either. For the same reasons (although alive).

Thompson's ashes have been packed into firework casings and will be dispersed today from 34 different shells fired from a gun barrel mounted on top of a 150-foot high monument Won't that contribute to global warming ?

"set up initially to raise funds for a permanent memorial to Hunter so future generations can ponder the life of one of the world's great mavericks". Gimme a break. The guy was a cookie cutter liberal - not some "great maverick. Then for added liberal silliness he went out as an unoriginal drama queen. Sorry, not impressed.

Any long-time friend of Pat Buchanan's and PJ O'Rourke's and hardcore firearms / explosives nut who lived in a heavily fortified compound in Colorado can hardly be called "a cookie cutter liberal".

Has the EPA approved of this? The Sierra Club? The fellow
travelers at The Million Mom March headquarters?

He can choose his own exit from this world, and give the grandest/weirdest party his imagination could plan....
...but there is an afterlife, of which he's experiencing right now.
...and he will answer to the Creator just like all of us.

Let's hope he lands on Ward Churchill... Good one.

"unoriginal drama queen". Good point,..
May I add some of what I said to yours,....
Self-indulgent, narcissistic, exaggerated sense of self-importance, unoriginal drama queen.
Or maybe drama queen covers it all.
