Is the decision by the Iraqi National Assembly (parliament) to postpone for a week its scheduled debate on a new draft constitution "a major setback" for the newly liberated nation, a or just a bump on the road to democratization?
There is no doubt that many who are nostalgic for the days of Saddam Hussein had been hoping and praying that the 15 August deadline would not be met. These are people who want Iraq to fail so that they could prove that George W Bush and Tony Blair were wrong in toppling the Ba'athist regime in Baghdad.
The postponement was a setback if only because this was the first time that the new leadership was unable to meet a political deadline it has fixed for itself. One cannot begrudge the opponents of the liberation their unique moment of jubilation.

Bump on the road to democratization.
Think back to the early years of our republic.
Thanks for the post. I used to frequent Benadar Associates, where all his articles are posted as routine.
Perhaps you may want to repost this one as Breaking News so that it remains around a while. Surely every Freeper should read what he had to say. In going on three years I yet to read an article by him that is not concice, honest, almost always found to be accurate in the final analysis.
This posts deserves to stay around a while. If anything, if all read it and took what he said to heart, it would cut down on an awfull lot of misguided remarks in threads on Iraq.
Don't you think?
The libs are upset because the Iraqis asked for an extra week to set up their plan for the transition from barbarism to civilization? Gee, when I was a carpenter we might have to put off finishing a roof for a week because of the weather.
"Think back to the early years of our republic."
Indeed. We didn't have our Constitution until 1788, and it's been amended - what? - 24 times since. I think we can give them another week before we yell "quagmire." Better to have something they've thought through, rather than rush towards an artificial deadline.
My biggest worry is they won't make Monday's deadline.
