MS-13 in Your Backyard(George Putnam Opines)

It is this reporter's opinion that while the nation focuses on terrorism, we have all but overlooked the issue of gang violence. Over the past fifty years in Los Angeles we have covered many of the homegrown gangs: the White Fence gang, Boyle Heights gang, the Bloods and the Crips, and others.

These were child's play compared with America's most dangerous gang: the Mara Salvatrucha 13 street gang (MS-13).

The gang was organized in Los Angeles in the late '80s and was named for La Mara, a street in San Salvador. Its primary purpose was to defend Salvadoran immigrants from being preyed upon by other L.A. street gangs. Gang members sometimes wear blue and white – colors taken from the flag of El Salvador. They also sport numerous body and facial tattoos.

MS-13 has expanded from California to Alaska, Oregon, Utah, Texas, Nevada, Oklahoma ... from New York to Los Angeles and Alaska to Florida. MS-13 has also been exported back to Central America. It is estimated there are 36,000 MS-13 members in Honduras alone.

They are vicious, they are violent, they murder, rob, rape and behead their victims.

MS-13 appears to be in control of much of the Mexican border. To sustain themselves financially, they smuggle people, drugs and guns across borders. They collect money from illegals. Where MS-13 goes, violence goes. They stop at nothing.

MS-13 is becoming everyone's problem. It is a plague that has come to Long Island from El Salvador by way of the streets of Los Angeles.

Good fences make good neighbors. Are you listening, Mr. President?

Heck, I know for a fact that MS13 operates within six blocks of my inner city high school. We've gotten police briefings on their activities, so we can be careful driving to and from work.

And that's assuming they're even two separate issues. A ruthless gang that operates internationally could well make itself a handy asset to terrorists for a price.

I know the area well. Liberty City, btw, is the WORST ghetto in the U.S. and I have been to Newark, Detroit, the Bronx, East St. Louis, etc.

Just curious because when I was living there (1999-2002), the Central Americans were in Riverside (particularly north and south of Flagler from 27th Avenue East) and had all but pushed the elderly Cubans out of Little Havana. From downtown on north was still largely black and VERY poor.

Still is. Except now the Haitians are moving in slowly. Paradise compared to Port Au Prince.

MS-13 got its start because the Boland Amendment didn't allow President Reagan to bring an early end to the raging wars in El Centro America.

Jim Wright of Texas

Lee Hamilton of Indiana

Edward Boland of Massachusetts

Michael Barnes of Maryland

David Bonior of Michigan

Robert Garcia of New York

And several others should be held most directly accountable for the creation of MS-13 because they are the guys who wrote and signed the "Dear Commandante" letter that gave encouragement to the Ortegas to continue the war and drive Nicaraguan and Salvadoran war refugees into the United States. The children of these refugees form the core of MS 13.

I lived in the Doral area. Clean, quiet, largely crime free. Never had any problems. Since it was a relatively new community there were NO school yet constructed, with all the local kids having to go to Miami Springs High (although most of my neighbors had their kids in private schools).

Getting back on topic, much like the Yakuza, MS-13 make themselves very easy to spot thanks to the tatoos.

Question: I've seen several young Hispanics lately with their names and other things tattooed across their neck and sometimes their face. This is in GA. Would you think this means gang involvement, or maybe just a cultural thing?

BTW the sleepy little town where I work had a drive-by shooting last week, at a wedding of all things. My co-worker's Dad and 3 others were shot. None seriously, thank Heaven. Sobering reality though. Who would'a thought?

It already has, according to World News Daily.....and Hugo Chavez, who has excellent sustaining relations with the FARC next door in Colombia, got in touch with OBL right after 9/11 to offer his assistance, leaving $1 million in the candy tray as his calling card. All on WND.

Set aside anything that might have had their fingerprints on it, note their account numbers and keep your security tapes, then call the FBI or the GBI right away. These guys are a serious problem wherever they go. I live in Houston, and they are the pits here, committing very brazen, heinous crimes.

Have you observed particular kinds of dog ownership among these MS? Do breeds of dogs function as any kind of marker?
