We need to get ahead of this movement, politically.

The Bush and Blair and Howard Administrations need to demand that the UN pass an official resolution stating that the UN will move into Iraq, with force, if the current Iraqi government faces any immiment stability crisis within the first 5 years of the U.S. led forces withdrawing from Iraq.

After all, our entire reason for staying there is for regional stability. If Russia, China, Germany, and France want the U.S. out of Iraq, then they need to be willing to help insure regional stability if we leave per their wishes.

And if they won't agree to step in to save the current Iraqi government, then we can use their reluctance to hammer them for why we are staying.

Politically, yes. Realistically, no. The UN would go back to their old ways and rob Iraq blind...

No way. The U.S. couldn't possibly extend that consideration to the United Nations.

If the Bush administration were to put this kind of responsibility in the hands of the United Nations, then it would utterly vindicate the cynicism of a lot of us who never believed the war had anything to do with defending the U.S. in the first place.

As far as I remember, before the war started the UN passed 17 resolutions and Iraq failed to comply even with its own UN inspectors. The UN failed to enforce its own resolutions. So in this case, if the UN resolution to move into Iraq with force don't succeed, they will probably adopt a resolution condemning the terrorists for being bad - and that's about it.

Good idea:

I could be wrong ... but isn't the OFF program still in place at the UN?

Thanks for pinging me to this thread, Southack.

The Russian leader said many Iraqis view the foreign troops as "occupiers" and suggested the withdrawal will encourage insurgents to abandon violence in favor of contributing to the creation of the state.

Putin is suggesting to appease those causing problems and mayhem in Iraq. Wrong.

Very well said, it would be interesting to see how Russia, China and France would vote on such a resolution if it were presented to the Security Council.
