The world's first interactive 3D display has been developed by IO2 Technology.
HelioDisplay creates 3D displays in the air using lasers, drawing input from computers, TVs and DVDs. It also allows interactive applications to be controlled by a finger, instead of a mouse.
"Our first generation version, the Heliodisplay, projects TV, streaming video and computer images into free space, (mid-air)", the company's website claims.
While it's early days for such technologies, the company has just completed its first production unit and claims it is ready to release a limited number of units for sale.

I saw a movie of their prototype unit several months ago - it had a watch rotating in space, it was the most amazing thing

Heliodisplay projects into thin air
Futuristic projector needs no screen to show video
Robert Jaques, vnunet.com 16 Aug 2005
ADVERTISEMENTA California-based firm today unveiled a futuristic projector that projects video onto thin air. The Heliodisplay, developed by IO2 Technology, is designed to display any video source in high-resolution without the need for a screen.
Viewers can walk around, or even through, the floating image, something possible only in science fiction until now, the technology's creator claimed. They can also move the image from the projector in mid-air with their fingers, allowing a PC cursor to be controlled by hand, without the need for special gloves.
"IO2 Technology is opening a new frontier in video display technology," said Philip Liang, a researcher at the MIT Media Lab, who bought two units immediately after previewing the Heliodisplay.
Heliodisplays are available with diagonal projecting image sizes from 22 to 42 inches.
Dyner declined to comment on future releases, but said that a "strong product pipeline" is in development.
Consumer reaction to the units, which went on the sale today after a year of development, has been extremely enthusiastic, Chad Dyner, CEO of IO2, said: " Based on the initial reaction and feedback we've received, the consumer and commercial applications for Heliodisplay are endless."

I saw a holography display in a mall in Houston 30 years ago. It was in front of a Jewelry store, was a clear box about 2'X 2' and was simply a woman's hand with a diamond ring on her finger. It was truly 3D in that you could walk around it and see the hand from different angles. Only drawback, it was transparent. You could see right through it.

You can see some of the examples on Google's cache of the heliosphere site. Very cool. But a little transparent right. What is amazing is that it is:
(1) large (22 or 42" models)
(2) in color (generally first generation is b/w)
