Bonds must like the secluded life
Palm Beach Post ^ | August 18, 2005 | Dave George

Barry Bonds had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in January. He's still out.

Gives a man time to think, a long leave of absence like that. About his life. About his career. About whether it makes sense to come back at all.

Crazy talk? Well, sure, but tell me what about Barry's recent behavior has been particularly bright.

I am thankful for Barry Bonds, for the gifts God has given him to do what he does.

God gave him the steroids? Time for another subpoena!

Bonds is a joke. A cheater from way back. The great shame is that he was once a stellar player. But to hang on to his abilities, he has sacrificed his name. He's a cheater and if baseball had any guts he'd be banned for life.

You keep repeating "the cream and the clear." Those are only the drugs he got caught with.

He used to say that he never took any. Then he got caught. Now he says he only took the ones he got caught with, and only the one time, and only by accident. What bad luck to have been caught at that one specific moment, when through no fault of his own he tested positive!

It's laughable on its face. The fact that people are so eager to buy it only slightly less so. He lied before, why should we believe him now?

As I posted back in June of 2003 to a topic regarding Sammy Sosa's corked bat incident:

* * * * * *

Sammy (Sosa) has certainly bulked up since 1998. What amazes me, however, is how so few sports journalists are willing to marvel at how Barry Bonds could add 40 pounds of muscle in two years.

There was lots of talk about McGwire, but it seemed a forbidden subject to point out that the entire shape of Barry's head changed (usually a sign of the use of human growth hormone) over two years.

I saw a documentary on PBS recently regarding "natural" bodybuilders. One man (certainly much younger than Bonds) was eating a dozen skinless chicken breasts and two dozen egg yolks a day, supplemented with powdered protein, in an attempt to gain weight and muscle while working out hours each day. He was only able to add 20-25 pounds of muscle in two years.

Bonds is and has always been an extraordinary all-around ball player. However, I'm stunned at the Emperor's New Clothes approach that everyone has taken regarding his last three or four years. The man seems to be a poster child for steroids and HGH.

I repeat... baseball is a team sport.

Barry Bonds is too selfish for this game.

We had a local boy who played for a small college football around my area and weighed around 230 his senior year. He was an excellent prospect and got drafted by the pros. He made the team, and within one year after graduation had gained seventy pounds of muscle. I don't know if that can be done naturally. Everyone around here suspected steroids. I'm sure your story and mine are common ones across America.

Forgive me for not knowing what props are. I an old guy and a traditionalist.

Barry's dad was a great player so he started from good stock. His performance was outstanding but it is hard to credit genes with that kind of improvement.

It is also hard for me to grant a guy his space, and my admiration and sympathy, when he takes millions of dollars and refuses to show up for work. Recuperation from knee surgery doesn't take that long, leaving us to wonder why he is still out and in seclusion.

What choices do we have to explain it? The first two to pop into my mind are: He is still on steroids or he is not wanting to show the metamorphosis his body went trough by not being on them.

Down the line are: maybe his knee is taking longer than normal, and maybe he is in a funk. The first may desereve sympathy but but not admiration, but the second is not worthy of admiration or sympathy.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt and granting his peccadilloes is not my inclination. You, of course, are free to do as you please.

Well crafted observations way back when...

and my admiration and sympathy

This you need not give. Space is space.

Admiration and sympathy are another thing altogether.

Nothing easier than kicking anyone when they are down.

Admiring them when they are up is much easier and uplifting. You are doing that now and I say good for you.

Bonds is only "down" because of his own actions.

I won't go easy on him for his steriod use just because he's suffering on account of that steroid use now.

We don't own him. We don't have rights to him. No one does!

I think you're a troll and I just stopped myself from wasting time on your trivial post. Still LOL at people like you defending cheaters like him.

I haven't listened to Rome in years. He's too obnoxious and full of himself. Are the words "Jim Everett" still verboten? I remember that any caller who got to "Jim Ever......" was immediately hung-up on, kinda like Err America.

No,I didn't feel anything after taking them.I only took the two pills the day after my surgery so I doubt they did much at all. They sure didn't make my back heal any better.

He WAS taking roids, and knows he has to stay out long enough for that to clear his system or his middle name will be Palmaro...

I would be absolutely shocked if he stopped taking them at any point for the rest of his career. No organized athlete should ever be caught. Someone like Bonds, because of money and institutional cover, has access to steroids that have been altered so they are undetectable by MLB. The computers can only screen for what they are programmed to screen. There are also masking agents that can prevent that sort of thing.

Palmeiro was caught because he foolishly used a steroid (stanozol) that has been a known drug for over 20 years. He was lazy, and gave MLB no choice but to sanction him which goodness knows they never want to do.

Since you're new here, here's an old thread about Barry Bonds:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1414596/posts

Apparently, when Barry's "just being Barry," he's an arrogant racist.

I am well aware of what Ron Kittle said.

That doesn't mean I would believe Ron Kittle.

My thoughts don't make me a lefty either.

I am a committed conservative with a strong libertarian twist.

One could say I am just extending the benefit of the doubt to Bonds.

Who is to say with what intonation or assumptive attitude Kittle came to Barry with too?

One cannot assume things with even one's spouse...he or she deserves the same respect, and even more so.
