Rice: Israel's evacuation of the Gaza Strip is only a first step

By Haaretz Service

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday said that while she feels for evacuated settlers Israel will be expected to make further concessions that would ultimately lead to an independent Palestinian state.

"Everyone empathizes with what the Israelis are facing," Rice said, but added "It cannot be Gaza only."

In an interview published by the New York Times, Rice said that the Palestinian Authority must move quickly to disarm Palestinian factions intent on breaking the current cease-fire with Israel.

The Secretary of State offered sympathy for the settlers who are being evacuated from their homes in Gaza but also made it clear that she expected Israel and the Palestinians to take further steps in short order toward the creation of a Palestinian state.

Such steps would include loosening travel restrictions in the West Bank and withdrawing from more Palestinian cities.

While the Israeli tears are still flowing.

So much for all the fantasies here about how now Israel will get some support.

Both sides must do more? What have the "Palestinians" done?

This is not Democrats, Liberals, Europeans, the UN. This is the Bush Administration. Republicans. Israel's best friend ever.

For the life of me, I can't see the gameplan here. What could possibly be the short or long term positives to these statements?

This is truly incredible! I cannot believe Rice is spouting this garbage and this policy. I am afraid that judgement is a coming for this nation!

The notion that Israel can hold on to a territory full of hostile Palestinians is a fantasy.

The Palestinians wish to exterminate the Jews. We know this. Rice knows this. Do you think they are stupid? Better the enemy without than the enemy within. The fact is that the Israelis cannot absorb a hostile population of Arabs who wish to kill them, no matter how many settlers you wish to plant down in Gaza and the West Bank.

Best to leave the Pallies to their own devices, and to their own inevitable civil war.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

...she feels for evacuated settlers Israel will be expected to make further concessions...Give the muslim killers what they want and they'll still keep killing us!

What a stupid policy!

What a lousy secretary of state!

Albright gave away missile guidance secrets, Rice gives away something she (and W) think will win them friends in the muslim world.

Fat chance!

As I see it Sharon's plan is to give up Gaza and the most Arab parts of the West Bank while keeping Jerusalem and the settlement blocks around it. If successful, his plan will make a Palestinian state impossible. Gaza will become part of Egypt and the Arab West Bank part of Jordan or Syria...or even Lebanon.

A good plan. If the U.S. supports it it will work.

In the meantime where are all the liberals who've been claiming that Jewish neo-cons run America?

“And I will make of thee [Israel] a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." (Genesis 12:2,3 KJV)

America as a nation is in danger of being cursed! Pray for GW Bush and his clueless foreign policy consultants.

IMHO, The idea is to show how willing everyone else is to cooperate with these people and let the world watch as they STILL continue their ways of violence and mayhem. This is a call to the world to quit the ridiculous propaganda and pay attention to what we are dealing with here. It probably won't work, but that seems like the game plan to me.

I do believe we need to start the letter writing and phone calling campaign to the White House. This is getting ridiculous.

That is EXACTLY the point - what have Palestinians (note my longstanding tagline) done? NOTHING. But what it all boils down to - the supposed peace plan does nothing but REWARD TERRORISM. Anyone who supports this "peace plan" that involves capitulating to the Terrorists are, in fact, SUPPORTING terrorism. If the Bush Administration is supporting the current capitulation, then they too are guilty of aiding terrorists.

At that point, we see how our own leaders (sorry to all the GW supporters - it's a fact) also talk out both sides of their mouths. Anyone who supports terrorists are the enemy of the US is our enemy - yet our own aministration is encouraging terrorism by rewarding terrorists for their actions.

I'm fed up.

The Jewish tie to the land is found in Judea- what some call the West Bank, not in the malls of Tel Aviv.

Now that we know it's OK to move population, if there are too many Arabs, there is a solution.

Note the date on that. This is consistent Bush Administration policy since Day One. Indeed, it's been the policy of every US President since 1967. The only holdup has been the emergence of responsible Palestinian leadership.

I really don't get why people think this is anything new.
