Columnist hits Sheehan nail on the head
Orlando Sentinel | August 17, 2005 | Kathleen Parker

Posted on 08/18/2005 5:42:35 AM PDT by From The Deer Stand

Columnist Kathleen Parker's recent column on Cindy Sheehan is worth reading. Parker writes, "At this point, Sheehan's demands have become impossibly problematic for Bush. Just as intended? By declining to see her, he seems cruel and out of touch with others' suffering. But by seeing her, he puts himself - and potentially the security of others - at great risk.

Why can't he come out?

He can't because he's the president of the United States, because we're at war, and because every move he makes causes ripples around the world. Ripples that, depending on other circumstances, can get other sons and daughters killed before Joe Trippi (Democratic consultant) can say, 'That's a wrap.'

He can't because what Sheehan's anti-war supporters want is neither a hug nor a few words of comfort. They want a confrontation - a wrenching, sobbing, high-noon showdown - soon to be a Democratic political ad and Al-Jazeera headline for the foreseeable future.

Sheehan, who opposed the war before her son died, belongs to the movement now. And Bush, regardless of what he personally might wish to do, has responsibilities that far exceed the crowd gathering beyond his Praire Chapel Ranch.

Once he allows himself to be captured in a video clip or a photograph, recoiling from the agony of a bereaved mother, the world is in greater danger. Democrats might be delighted to freeze that image in political time, but so would insurgents, planning their next Baghdad ambush.

Whatever Sheehan hoped for in the beginning of her watch is irrelevent now. She and her cause have been usurped and distorted by the phenomenon of which she is the center. Her healing will have to wait until the next big story breaks and the media circus moves on."

Lining up dead people to support a cause that they probably would not have supported in life takes a special kind of villainy and cruelty. It's like using dead police officers to point out the futility of law enforcement, or dead race car drivers to trumpet the evils of NASCAR.

One of the most sacred things we can do for the dead is to speak for them honestly and in a way that accurately reflects how and why they lived. To take a corpse and put false words in its mouth is just villainy. It is the sort of thing worthy of Stalin or Big Brother.

That's the worst thing being done by Cindy Sheehan. By putting up her dumb crosses to "honor the dead," she's trying to re-animate the dead and put them into a forced march for the enemy. But that's what all peaceniks do.

Hooray for the pickup driver who tried to break up this sick, manipulative protest. You can tell how sick and manipulative it is by how much the media love it.

There, that's my column.

What Sheehan needs is a meeting with a mental health professional. (and a plastic surgeon)

G-d Bless President Bush for having to put up with this garbage. I may be pretty young, but I do not remember former President Reagan getting his due respect until he was way out of office and no praise until he had actually died and the MSM was FORCED to look upon him as a great public figure who changed the world (excluding nut jobs like Ted Rall, etc.). Sad to say, but it looks like our great president will suffer the same public fate.

actually, the Democrats are mortified to see these image frozen in political time:

and she then pretends that all she wants in this whole world is a chance to speak with President Bush about her son, Casey, when in fact

President Bush is hardly "recoiling" from "the agony of this bereaved mother", is he??
sheehan's political agenda is crystal clear and this entire Crawford charade is deceitfully vile and repugnant!!!

"still think that someone needs to sit outside of Bill Clinton's home or Hilary's home or Gorelick's home or Reno's home or Berger's home or..."

Now that would be a good counter punch. organize a bunch of Serbs to sit outside Clintons home and demand answers as to why he bombed them when all they were doing was protecting themselves against an Islamic Jihad. I wonder if the media would give the time of day to them, and Clintons blunder, and the mess he made of that country, the mothers children that he killed.

On Imus this morning Senator Allen (r) from Virginia said that the president should have met with Sheehan, even had lunch with her rather than letting this get so out of hand. OUT OF HAND? It's the leftist media that hyped this into a bogus news story.

Yes he did and for that lack of judgement and for his proclivity to kiss Don Imus's ass, Allen will get my vote for POTUS when hell freezes over the second time.

Senator Allen should venture into reality and get a clue!

President Bush ought to order several pizzas to be delivered to the protesters. It would show he cared about them as people, but doesn't put him in the awkward position of having to meet with them personally.

No one has done more to create more gold star parents
than Cindy is doing right now!

She gives aid and comfort to the enemy and emboldens him
to attack more troops...killing and wounding more of our people..

Someone should shove those FACTS under her rather ample nose
daily...and on camera...

I don't believe she has any grief at all. It seems to me she hated her own son and everything he stood for and now she is glad that he is dead, because it gives her the media attention she craves.

Every month there is a news story about a mother who kills one or more of her own children, and there are plenty of people who do not like or resent their own children and express these feelings in the most callous ways.

Just because this individual gave birth to Casey Sheehan, an American hero, doesn't mean that she was a loving mother or a good mother.

Her behavior recently is evidence that, psychologically, she is an Andrea Yates type.

I don't feel sorry for her at all. I feel contempt for her and gratitude toward her heroic son who overcame her pernicious influence to become an exemplar of all that is best about this country.

. . . order several pizzas to be delivered to the protesters.

I think they've been eating pizzas all along, with lots of mushrooms.

Nope. He should completely ignore them.

The media will latch on to any action by the president in any way as a means of justifying extending the story further and covering it more aggressively.
