Alexy II on the need to borrow positive sides of the Soviet education system

Moscow, August 15, Interfax - Russian society should not bury in oblivion the positive results of the Soviet education system, Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia believes.

‘The Soviet education system made certain achievements, which seemed to confirm its methods as appropriate on the face of it. In that period the state developed very intensively, making remarkable achievements in industrial production, developing virgin lands, promoting science, creating space and military technology’, the patriarch stated at a meeting with youth last weekend in Kaluga.

The primate of the Russian Church noted that the socialist norms of behaviour that were to be used in ordering one's life ‘were outwardly close to the commandments of Christ. In fact the imperishable significance of moral religious norms (at least in social relations) was thus recognized notwithstanding the atheistic spirit of the entire ideological system’.

At the same time, one of the main reasons for the fall of the Soviet regime was that ‘the then state ideology lacked an internal pivot that could give solidity and integrity to the entire system’, the patriarch believes.

‘The moral norms, which looked certainly positive, lacked the most important thing - the justification of the need to follow them, which is naturally absent in a value system built exclusively on the materialistic perception of the world’, Alexy II is quoted as saying by the Orthodox Encyclopedia church research center.

At the same time the patriarch is convinced that the recognition that the ideological policy of the Soviet state was wrong ‘should not consign to oblivion or denounce the feat performed by many generations of our ancestors’, adding that ‘one cannot be a true son of one’s Motherland without knowledge of her history and with alienation from her religious and cultural heritage’.

‘It is my conviction that it is with Orthodoxy that future fortune of Russia is linked’, he emphasized.

"The primate of the Russian Church noted that the socialist norms of behaviour that were to be used in ordering one's life ‘were outwardly close to the commandments of Christ."

The Stalin era socialist norms of behavior meant spying on your friends and neighbors and telling NKVD if somebody was engaging in counterrevolutionary activities (like telling the jokes about Stalin or Communist Party or not attending workplace Communist gatherings where the "enemies of the people" were routinely found and denounced) which could be a good ground for arrest and sending people to prison or GULAG. Did Christ taught anything resembling that ?

Alexy II is a KGB operative playing Christian.

Pavka Morozov - is that the perfect model for Alexy II?

I see you've taken a break from your Polish lessons. How much do they cost in Brussels?

Soviet Society (though it failed pathetically at it without a belief in God) taught honest, loyalty and hard work (again, lacking God it failed). Furthermore, the education system took a nation from 70% literacy to 97% literacy. I'm sure you criticize literacy and college education, especially for those savage Russians who'd you'd be happy to see in caves or just dead, right?

He was KGB agent, I don’t understand why he cannot leave his past behind, including ideology. (like his pals in other former communist countries) Anyway he would not be clean but why he is still spreading and excusing Soviet system? In effect he discrediting himself once again.

I suppose so -:)))) Again, lizol, what do you expect from the Church that is descendant of Bolshevik Collaborationist Orthodox Church of the 1920's. During Civil War, thousands of Orthodox Priests opposing Bolsheviks and other genuine Orthodox believers were butchered by the Red Army. Some of the Orthodox chose to collaborate with Bolsheviks and under Bolshevik Direction created a church that was subservient to the Soviet State--Christian outward, but Bolshevik inward. I can't blame all of the Orthodox Priests who chose to collaborate back then--not everybody can stand to die for faith or be sent to jail if you refuse to cooperate. Modern Russian Orthodox church is a continuation of this collaborationist church.

Orthodox Church in Russia is experiencing the same problem that the rest of Russian society--not giving proper judgement of the past.

jb6 you are again distorting your opponents views. We are talking that Alexy II is essentially rehabilitating Soviet ideology that sent tens of millions of people to their graves throughout fmr. USSR and round the world.

Nobody says anything against quality education for Russians. I'm 200% that Russian kids have the access to the world class public and private education system.

Yes, Soviet System had its great achievements in Sciences and other areas, but the Soviet system educated its citizens to be its educated slaves--not freethinking productive citizens. Do you want children in modern Russian schools to be taught glories of Socialist achievements instead of learning what really happened under Lenin, Stalin, Brezhnev, etc ?

Geez, jb6 - it shows perfectly, that you have no idea how the daily life under communism looked like - people's "loyalty", "honest" and "hard working".

Furthermore, the education system took a nation from 70% literacy to 97% literacy.

Sure, and probably if not communism - Russia would never manage to educate its people. Until today. (sarcasm, of course).

Are we to understand that the Soviets were OK, except that they didn't believe in God? Are you serious or maybe your sarcasm was lost on me?

You better ask Jb6 what he meant--I am not always clear on his line of thought -:))))

My take is this--the Soviet educational system greatest achievement was creating educated slaves for the ugly Soviet system en masse.

It's a fact that literacy rate under soviet system was about 97% while under Imperial Russia it was about 10% (don't remember exactly). However, when kids are brainwashed in glories of socialism, communism, Marxism, than its a PERVERSION of the true goal of education--to create free thinking citizens who can think independently and understand the real picture of the world. If Alexy II said that Russia needs a world class Public, Private, and parochial education system to prepare next generations of Russians for the modern world, than I would 100% endorse it. However, Alexy II essentially endorsed the Marxist brainwashing of Kids and Youth were experiencing in Soviet Union educational system, from elementary School to College.
