More homes in U.S. go solo [single-adult households outnumber two-parent households for first time]
Washington Times ^ | August 17, 2005 | Cheryl Wetzstein

Single-adult households have displaced two-parent families with children as the most common kind of U.S. household, the Census Bureau reported yesterday.

The change demonstrates "the growing complexity" of American households, researchers said in a new report, "Examining American Household Composition: 1990 and 2000."

"It's breathtaking how many people still think that the 'mom, pop and two kids' is the majority of households," said Peter Francese, the founder of American Demographics magazine.

Nuclear-family households -- two married parents and a child -- were the most common as recently as 1990, when there were 25 million such households.

But by 2000, nuclear-family households fell to second place, both because there were almost a half-million fewer of these type of homes and because the number of single-adult households surged past 27 million.

Married households without children remained the third most common, with 20 million in 1990 and 22 million in 2000.

Mr. Francese, who has studied U.S. demographic trends for 35 years, said single-adult households are continuing to grow and might even hit 34 million by the 2010 census.

This statistic shows that our economy has progressed and it is now easier for a person to be independant on the average wage.

Good or bad? It seems marriage doesn't prevent breakups, it just makes breakups unjust.

Additionally, it is not possible for a man to enter a legally equitable relationship with a woman. Married men are 2nd class citizens and men married with kids are little more than serfs. I.E. no real claim on their future labor or even the custody and upbringing of their children.

No thanks.

Proud SINK here (Single-income, no kids).

What are you proud of? You have not yet given life to anybody nor future to our country. What pride is there in living for oneself? And, how hard is that to consider it an achievement?

The implication of an article like this is that kids don't grow up anymore in traditional Ozzie-and-Harriet-type families (living with their mom and dad, both of whom are married to each other). This of course is absurd. In middle and upper middle class parts of Los Angeles, upwards of 90% of all kids are living with both parents. Even in Compton and Watts, the figures aren't that bad. People who trumpet the news that traditional families are dead are either (1) leftists who consider the family as a impediment to the nanny state or (2) anti-family feminists/lesbians (if calling someone a feminist lesbian isn't a bit redundant) who basically would like to see the family dry up and disappear.

it would be a good thing if the court system wasn't geared towards screwing over married men upon divorce.

What shame is there in it?

It is sad that people cannot work out their problems, especially where children are involved.

I guess living for oneself is now forbidden. Wow, conservatism has truly gone downhill.

Those of us of a certain age are cynical about marriage, especially us guys. It comes from seeing too many marriages broken and too many friends getting their bank accounts cleaned out, even though they were often not at fault.

My parents, thankfully, remain married after 33 years. They are the exception, however.

The question is: Is it a rational thing?

1) leftists who consider the family as a impediment to the nanny state

OTOH, you could decide the nanny state is too great of an impediment to creating a family. I couldn't bear to send kids to a government school or to be reduced to indentured servitude without even so much as custody. These are serious disincentives to creating to a family in the first place.

It's also sad that some people turn psycho after getting married and use the children as little more than pawns.

Sadly, in most cases like that, it's the women engaging in the vicious behavior.
