Proud SINK here (Single-income, no kids). I'm sure other Freepers are in the same situation.
...reading.
This statistic shows that our economy has progressed and it is now easier for a person to be independant on the average wage.
SUNK here. Single mom with no child support working two jobs.....
Good or bad? It seems marriage doesn't prevent breakups, it just makes breakups unjust.
Me too! (unless you count the cats)
Additionally, it is not possible for a man to enter a legally equitable relationship with a woman. Married men are 2nd class citizens and men married with kids are little more than serfs. I.E. no real claim on their future labor or even the custody and upbringing of their children.
No thanks.
How sad that you feel that a traditional family is not a good thing.!!!!!!
What are you proud of? You have not yet given life to anybody nor future to our country. What pride is there in living for oneself? And, how hard is that to consider it an achievement?
The implication of an article like this is that kids don't grow up anymore in traditional Ozzie-and-Harriet-type families (living with their mom and dad, both of whom are married to each other). This of course is absurd. In middle and upper middle class parts of Los Angeles, upwards of 90% of all kids are living with both parents. Even in Compton and Watts, the figures aren't that bad. People who trumpet the news that traditional families are dead are either (1) leftists who consider the family as a impediment to the nanny state or (2) anti-family feminists/lesbians (if calling someone a feminist lesbian isn't a bit redundant) who basically would like to see the family dry up and disappear.
it would be a good thing if the court system wasn't geared towards screwing over married men upon divorce.
What shame is there in it?
It is sad that people cannot work out their problems, especially where children are involved.
I guess living for oneself is now forbidden. Wow, conservatism has truly gone downhill.
My parents, thankfully, remain married after 33 years. They are the exception, however.
I have THREE degrees and a successful career. I have a nice pad in a great neighborhood and generally enjoy life. MAYBE I will get married, maybe not.
The question is: Is it a rational thing?
OTOH, you could decide the nanny state is too great of an impediment to creating a family. I couldn't bear to send kids to a government school or to be reduced to indentured servitude without even so much as custody. These are serious disincentives to creating to a family in the first place.
It's also sad that some people turn psycho after getting married and use the children as little more than pawns.
Sadly, in most cases like that, it's the women engaging in the vicious behavior.
