"Jobs Americans won't do"

By: RICK REISS - Commentary

Temecula has become an epicenter in the debate on illegal immigration. Last year, the Temecula Border Patrol station conducted numerous sweeps of illegal immigrants throughout the region. Political pressure quickly ended this operation. To his chagrin, a top Homeland Security official later faced an outraged public for shutting down these sweeps.

Public outrage over the federal government's failure to control immigration spawned the creation of voluntary citizen patrols along the border. One such Minuteman Project effort just recently finished in Campo. A similar border watch project is scheduled for the Otay Mesa area in the coming weeks.

Knee-jerk liberals routinely label Minuteman volunteers as racists or Nazis. Such childish political tactics only serve one purpose ---- to shut down debate.

Why is it racist or fascist to expect that our nation's sovereignty as defined by the Constitution be upheld? It's obvious that open-border advocates care little about America's sovereignty or the Constitution.

Apologists frequently throw out the red herring that illegal immigrants only come here to wash dishes, landscape or perform other menial jobs "unfit" for Americans.

Mexico President Vicente Fox recently stated that illegal immigrants of Mexican descent only take American jobs "that not even blacks want to do." Even President Bush upped the ante by stating that illegal immigrants "are coming here to do jobs that Americans won't do."

Maybe we should take a look at the kind of "work" that some of these illegal immigrants are performing for us.

- Adrian Camacho will soon stand trial for the murder of Oceanside police officer Tony Zeppetella. Deported several times to Mexico, Camacho's only known occupation was a gang member. In a jailhouse letter received by law enforcement, Camacho wrote that "the only good cop is a dead cop."

- Hong Chen, a "laborer" and illegal immigrant from China is wanted by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation. Convicted of sexual assault on a child, Chen was last seen in Los Angeles.

- Andres Camacho-Avalos is another criminal illegal immigrant from Mexico who is wanted by ICE for deportation. Camacho-Avalos was convicted of two counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14.

- Wanted by the FBI, Arnoldo Dejesus Garcia has a work history as a dishwasher. Dejesus Garcia is a criminal illegal immigrant from Mexico wanted for forcible lewd acts on a child under 14, forcible rape and assault with intent to commit a felony. This "hard-working immigrant" has ties to San Diego.

- Rigoberto Leon Nino, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, is wanted by the San Diego County sheriff for vehicular manslaughter of a mother and one of her two small daughters. A past resident of Vista, the safe bet is that Leon Nino absconded to Mexico.

Of course, these cases are just the tip of the immigration iceberg. It's bad enough that Americans must contend with our own homegrown rapists and murderers. Do we really need to outsource to other countries for criminals as well?

The answer is obvious: Secure the borders now.

Author's note: Original submitted essay repeatedly used the term "illegal aliens" not "illegal immigrants"

These changes were made in the editorial room.

I've applied for some of the jobs "Americans won't do." I never got any of them. The reason Americans won't do these jobs is that their "American" employers won't hire Americans to do them.

We need to crack down on employers who hire illegal aliens. We need to deport illegals. We need a vastly enhanced borer patrol and state militias backing up an electrified barbed wire fence, a moat, and another wall.

We also need to be stringent about getting welfare recipients to work. (We should also make any woman nwho comes in for AFDC identify the father and garnish is wages until the kid is 18 -- unless he marries the mother and stays married to her that whole time.)

The let's see if Americans will do these jobs. You bet they will.

What about the HOMELESS who don't have a job? There are plenty of jobs for them to do. We don't need to spend millions of dollars to subsist on handouts!

The FR open border braintrust, headed by bayourod, has basically said every american will cry out in anger if their favorite sushi chef is deported and there is no one to fill his shoes. We can't enforce our border, folks...THINK OF THE SUSHI!! WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE SUSHI!?!?!?!

Great article. Another "signal" contribution of the illegals that the writer may wish to comment on sometime is the bankrupting and closing down of numerous hospital trauma centers throughout the southwest. Illegals are "coached" by their poverty pimps, if they are in need of medical care, to call an ambulance and request transport to the nearest emergency/trauma center where they are required (I guess by law) to provide FREE medical treatment and pick up the tab for the ambulance. The practice has become so prevalent in some areas that trauma facilities, unable to recover costs, have been forced completely out of business thereby diminishing the overall level of US medical services available. I understand that this has been the fate of many trauma centers in Arizona and California.

I think Bush and Fox are talking about farm workers, however, not all Mexicans want to do farm labor, either!

The two-party system isn't working anymore. Politicians don't work for the people anymore, just the perks of the job. We're either going to have to protest or revolt against our own government, which isn't the keenest of ideas since we know they'll bring the National Guard to bear...which is what we need anyway.

On the O'Reilly Factor, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico said he has declared a state of emergency because of the illegal criminals coming from Mexico. O'Reilly said he should call out the National Guard and the governor hemmed and hawed. If Gov.Richardson were to get together with the governors of AZ, TX, and CA and declare a state of emergency...who knows what could happen?

[[The let's see if Americans will do these jobs. You bet they will.]]

In the past, I've worked as:

a landscaper
a janitor
a dishwasher (in a Chinese restaurant owned by recent legal immigrants)

It disgusts me when some snooty person, who would never do a job that required them to get their fingernails dirty, projects their own sentiments on me by saying "These are jobs that Americans won't do".

This is just sophistry to make themselves feel better about supporting the status quo of illegal immigration.

When wages become sufficiently depressed so that native born and illegals are earning about the same, then American employers will turn to American workers.

Before I retired, I worked for the local phone company. When I went into new neighborhoods, the bricklayers were Mexican, the painters, the roofers, carpenters, electricians, sheetrockers, and floortile and carpet layers, were all Mexican. I know most, if not all were illegal. For some reason the concrete guys were mostly black. All these jobs were good paying jobs, not minimum wage. This is my reference when someone says these jobs are some nobody wants. Nobody wants to pick lettuce, but my whole generation grew up as carpenters, painters, and bricklayers and such.

Union labor would probably be $25-$30 an hour, but most of these are $12-$18 now. If nothing else, I know some teens and young marrieds that would love to have these jobs.

Or how about the jobs that I have been fully qualified to do, BUT I don't speak Spanish. So therefore, I don't qualify. Many jobs out there now require that you speak Spanish. It's maddening. I refuse to go to a college and pay to learn to speak Spanish. Therefore, I am a lady of leisure. I give up. Because the employers in my field of expertise are hiring non-English speaking employees, so as a Supervisor, I must speak Spanish. What a bunch of crap.

Most homeless are homeless because they will not work at any job.

Many are mentally sick and cannot work.

Thats a well document point.

You can't make them work.

Thats why 95% of available workers is considered full employment.

However, I do agree with the article as posted.

Tucson had one of their level one trauma centers close last year.

Cochise County, over the last 10 years, has seen all but one of their Maternity Wards close. Sierra Vista now has the only one between the Mexican border and Tucson.
