Myrick holds town meeting to discuss illegal immigration - Scott Gardner Immigration Act

GASTONIA -- Congresswoman Sue Myrick will take her tough talk on illegal immigration to the people Tuesday night in a community meeting in Gastonia to discuss her proposed Scott Gardner Immigration Act.

The proposal is named for the Gaston County man who police say was killed by an illegal immigrant driving drunk. Some critics of the proposed legislation worry about the impact it could have on local businesses and on a segment of the population.

Some people 6NEWS spoke to Tuesday agree with Myrick that drunk driving has to be stopped. But they said Myrick is reaching too far in her fight by teetering into racial profiling or bounty hunting immigrants.

Construction worker Antonio Martinez moved to Charlotte nearly a decade ago from Mexico. He is here on a work permit but during the first two years in the US he was illegal. He was a member of the very same population that Myrick is targeting in proposed legislation.

“Hiring an illegal alien is against the law," Myrick said during a news conference Monday.

Myrick's legislation aims to increase the penalty for hiring an illegal immigrant from $250 to $10,000, with a cut of that money going to the arresting agency.

"So if North Carolina has 300,000 illegal aliens and at least half of them are employed, this could raise at least $1.2 billion," Myrick said.

A man who did not want to be identified is president of a local construction company. He said all of his employees are documented.

“It’s probable, not just possible, that any and every person that employs more than 10 or 12 Hispanic people in their company could easily have a person that is not legal and not be aware of that,” the man said.

He went on to say there are not enough Americans who want to do this type of work and fears Myrick's bill could lead to the demise of his business.

Both he and Martinez also fear the part of Myrick's bill that would allow law enforcement to stop and check a person's status at any time.

“It’s actually racial stereotyping,” the unidentified man said.

“If they stop me…when I get out of the car when I go and buy groceries I’m just going to have to move,” Martinez said.

The unidentified man said he believes the government's resources would be better spent helping more immigrants become legal.

The Gardner family is expected to attend Tuesday’s town hall meeting at Myrick's office.

Could your state use an extra $1.2 BILLION DOLLARS for roads, scholls, DEPORTATION OFFICERS?

I love this:

WRONG!!! She's teetering into enforcing the freaking law, and perhaps saving innocent lives. What the @#$^#%&^ is so wrong with that? I'll tell you what's wrong with that. It eliminates a class of victims and deprives the Left of a segment of their base.

Here, just in case anyone missed it:

It eliminates a class of victims and deprives the Left of a segment of their base.

Ah yes, he "moved to", the new, approved PC description for breaking into the United States.

Myrick is in overdrive trying to get NC voters to forget about her "aye" vote for that other mass immigration bill, CAFTA.

CAFTA has NOTHING to do with immigration, no matter what the Buchananbots and Social(ist) "Conservatives" would have you believe.

Sure they are and I am Howard Dean! ROTFLOL!

I live in the next district north to Sue Myrick's and have watched more than one house being built by crews with one person who speaks limited English and the rest of the crew speaks Spanish. The workers do not want to learn English and do not seem to understand the need for it.

I sat on my screen porch four years ago and watched them try to frame a roof. These 'crack' framers ripped the framing down three times because they did not understand how to get the 'rise and run' right. The roof today is sagging, multiple shingles are coming off and I am sure there are leaks into the house and that is just what I can see from my screen porch.

Sure these contractors are saving money on these Mexican laborers but the workmanship is beyond shoddy for most of them.

Wrong. Keep trying.

BTW, Really loved that earlier racist comment you had about "old people who are going to die anyway".

Showing you for who ya are, Clemmie.

That was an AGEIST comment, not a racist one. I was just pointing out that the only folks in the NYC area who seem to complain about immigration were old folks in blue collar neighborhoods. Most New Yorkers who live in the city don't give a sh-t.

It says alot about you that you saw a racial angle into what I said.

That's a coy dodge. No, it's rather obvious who you were referring to....."old white people", 'cuz after all, who else is there that's old? Not the new "immigrants".

Weave and Bob all you want. It's what you wanted to say, it's what you implied (because everyone has the requisite mental image of who you're referring to), but you couched in thinly disguised code to deflect criticism.

Ain't no different than the kinda crap that Jose Angel Gutierrez spews.

Well, I hope to be an old white man someday, although not as cranky as certain other folks. ;-)

"CAFTA has NOTHING to do with immigration, no matter what the Buchananbots and Social(ist) "Conservatives" would have you believe."

You should read it sometime, before you make a fool out of yourself (again).
