Music Industry Worried About CD Burning
Associated Press ^ | August 14, 2005 | Alex Veiga

-- Music copied onto blank recordable CDs is becoming a bigger threat to the bottom line of record stores and music labels than online file-sharing, the head of the recording industry's trade group said Friday.

"Burned" CDs accounted for 29 percent of all recorded music obtained by fans in 2004, compared to 16 percent attributed to downloads from online file-sharing networks, said Mitch Bainwol, chief executive for the Recording Industry Association of America.

The data, compiled by the market research firm NPD Group, suggested that about half of all recordings obtained by music fans in 2004 were due to authorized CD sales and about 4 percent from paid music downloads.

Too late. And unlike online file sharing, recording a CD is completely anonymous. People can take a CD to a neighbor and no one will be the wiser. Even RIAA can't confiscate every CD burner in the country.

This is just bullcrap being used by the industry to prop up calls for a "pirate tax" on all recordable media.

I've had it with the MPAA and the RIAA and their anti-technology insanity. To hell with them and their damned fascist lawyers.

The only reason anyone would own a CD-burner (or a computer, for that matter) is to enable them to steal from the RIAA.

Anyone who owns a computer should be in prison.

And anyone who does not recognize the above as sarcasm should report to their local chapter of Nincompoops of America immediately.

If I am paying for and downloading songs, what IS the problem with me burning MY files onto MY blank CDs?

Are they coming after my CD burner now?

That's why I own one.

Hey, don't be so hard on us. We have to distinguish between Freepers acting stoopid for sarcasm reasons, and Democrat trolls, who aren't acting.

First it was book burning, now it's CD burning! It's a fascist plot! Fahrenheit 451 all over again!

What? Oh, I see. Copying CD's. That's different.

NEVER MIND!

I think I heard the same thing about cassettes in the 70's!

You did, and you heard it about video in the 1980s.

Wasn't true then, either.
