Concerns about Hollywood skinniness seem misplaced

We seem to be watching a horror show of too thin Hollywood actresses. Or at least that would be the observation of anyone who even skims the tabloids, talk shows or People Magazine...

Bakery cookies with pink icing! You don't know what you're missing!!! :) Just kidding...

I stand corrected...Mr. Bush was as the verge of 'overweight.' I was going from memory and I knew that it was assessment that seemed outrageous. The BMI, like the studies on breast cancer have to be viewed in terms of the overall health and lifestyle of a pt.

Just anecdotal, but I have had five babies, the first three in under five years. I nursed them all to their first birthdays (and in some cases a little beyond). And yes, I kept on a few pounds here, a few pounds there and I am heavier than I was in HS. But if you read the study listed above, at face value, I have a dramatically higher risk of breast cancer because I have gained over 20 lbs in 20 years. Period. Never mind 5 pregnancies, 5 years of lactation, vitamins and the active lifestyle that a large family brings. I have a dear friend who prides herself on the fact that she has never gone above a size 6 (and she is annoying about sharing the info too). She has two kids (low birth weight babies each), never nursed, smokes over a pack a day and never is without a Diet Pepsi. According to the weight scale she would be the epitome of good health (no weight gain in over 20 years), a low risk of breast cancer. But realistically, who really is in better health over the long haul?

Remember the BMI scales that state, if taken seriously, both President Bush and Michael Jordan are 'obese.'

Yes, indeed. Besides, weight is a risk factor for disease, not necessarily the cause, as you've been pointing out. There are so many disease vectors that to concentrate on weight is shortsighted, imo. Total package is more important. I would think that someone who weighs a little more than they should, according to the BMI, but is active, eats all things in moderation, ect...is probably plenty healthy, imo. There is always room for improvement, of course! :) (If I could toss that 1/2 pack of cigs a day habit, I'd be doing well!)

Actually a much more effective strategy for keeping weight down is to making a habit of NOT eating meals, and of only eating a little bit at a time when you're hungry. Big meals stretch your stomach and get your liver producing large amounts of bile -- both of which will tend to make your eat more the next time you eat. The other problem with "meals" is that they tend to be planned events, which occur at a certain time regardless of whether any or all of the participants happen to be hungry at that time, and also encourage a mentality of "eat now, because soon it will all be cleared away and no longer available" (translation: eat more than you really want now, because if you don't you might get hungry later). Anyone who has trouble controlling their weight should firm policy of never eating except when hungry, apart from rare special occasions.

How about the Grammar Terrorist? This is something that I called myself once upon a time in a world far away when I was an English instructor who liked to play games, and the world seemed a lot safer.

IT's all just statistics anyway. I am the poster child for everything that is low risk for breast cancer (well, "just" two kids, but nursed both six months) but I'm in the middle of chemo for it right now :-(

Ya rolls the dice...

Haha!

Actually, I like hot minds and a lot of twinkle in the eyes more than a lot of hoopla in the looks department because in real life, hot minds get hotter with age and so does the twinkle.

But, I'm happily married to a guy with a hot mind and a twinkle in his eye and imo pretty hot all the way around...so you are completely welcome to Morimoto. I've seen a pic though. Not sure what he qualifies for but I'm thinking it would be...great cook. ; )

P.S. Sorry about the typo.

I don't know. I've always eaten two full meals a day and a partial meal at breakfast. I'm very active though.

My wife and I agreed that Courtney Cox was beautiful and very healthy appearing in "Ace Ventura,Pet Detective", but then she lost so much weight and by the end of "Friends", she looked very unhealthy. All things in moderation, said the Apostle Paul.

Sounds like some bureaucrat nannie-puke looking for more people to label with "mental illness". Of course this trivializes those with real eating disorders.

I get the same thing about my bicycling (still racing in USCF events at 50? At my age I should be just doing the lowest common denominator health club routine. Hey, a common thread, fit everyone into the lowest common denominator cookie cutter of mediocrity.)

According to the cookie cutter BMI, a track cyclist competing at UCI World Championships at 6' and 210# is at risk of obesity. Never mind that he's at maybe 6% body fat or less, and has a maximum power output of 1800 watts.

That (and just about any other pattern) works fine for people who don't have any trouble controlling their weight, and who don't have problems with hypoglycemia (which is often at the root of mild overweight problems). But for those struggling to lose weight or keep weight down, the frequent small servings throughout the day usually works best. The trick though, it not to let that schedule be an excuse for eating nothing but junk food. A diet consisting of a donut in the morning, a little bag of potato chips an hour later, then a candy bar, then a sugary soda, etc. obviously isn't conducive to long term weight control or good health. But with a bit of planning, many small healthy snacks instead of a few big meals can be a very healthy way to eat.

When it’s obvious that the woman is out of my league looks wise, it only heightens the feeling.
I was sent on one heck of an ego trip back when I was working for a living. Several of the young ladies – all very good looking – from my office took me out drinking and dancing one night (before I met Sheryl). They didn’t do it because I was so great, but because they were tired of men hitting on them and figured I would do a good job of keeping them away.
It worked like a charm. I was fairly good size with visible tattoos. Every time a guy would hit on one of the women, she would give me a hug and kiss. A lot of the guys were wondering why these attractive young women were hanging on a grizzled old biker.

Oh man, don't get me started on that stupid office party fat chick scam. The lovely women I work with stack donuts/cookies/pizza and anything else they think they can get away with on a table right behind my cube. Makes me so mad! Bagels are the hardest. I hate it when they bring the bagels. ha ha

That post made me want to cry. My husband tells me the same thing but I accuse him of lying.

"There is a reason why Hollywood promotes the boyish body: F-A-G-S."

I had never thought of that, it's soooooo true.
It needs to be put on a billboard somewhere.
