We seem to be watching a horror show of too thin Hollywood actresses. Or at least that would be the observation of anyone who even skims the tabloids, talk shows or People Magazine...

Well, like someone else said, to each his own. I think she's much skinnier (and less attractive) now than in either of those pics.

But there is one historical difference - many men (and quite a few women) now have standards so impossibly high that they are unattainable.
I know guys who think they are entitled to date extremely attractive women and are now alone because no woman they are actually introduced to meets the standard.
I likewise know women who will not date good-looking men with pretty decent jobs, because a friend of a friend married a multimillionaire and now they live in a swank house in Short Hills and why shouldn't she be able to do the same thing? Why should she have to settle?
It's really pathetic.
Being a Christian, I have limited respect for the evolutionary standpoint -- or for the human nature argument. We're fallen creatures, and excusing bad behavior with "it's just nature" has never held sway with me. That something bad (whatever that something might be) is to some degree natural doesn't magically transform it into something good, or even neutral.
I also think that much of what both men and women consider attractive in the opposite sex is due to culture and habit. A look at different cultures in different time periods will show that. So even if you respect the "it's just nature" argument, you have to separate nature from culture.
From a woman's perspective (at least this woman's), there's a bit of a scam in the evolution/nature argument. Men get to pig out, let themselves go, and still they convince themselves that they are attractive to women. But a woman can't do the same thing because -- men declare -- she will be unattractive. It's called having your cake and eating it to.
And now I'm hungry.
Yeah, that's what I meant. I am sure he was talking about Jessica, since I made the earlier comment that Jess had "slimmed down" for her role in DoH (specifically, she worked a lot on her backside, since that going to be shown off a lot). Or maybe I misunderstood what you meant. Whatever. :o)
Wait a minute. I'm a female Food Network junkie, and although I love Alton Brown's show, I don't find him particularly "hot". Hmmm, who could be the Rachel Ray (real but incredibly sexy) for the ladies here? I like Emeril but he's a little too heavy, and just not my type. I think Bobby Flay would turn out to be an @$$hole in real life. But he's pretty cute.
I may have to think on this a little. OH! Wait! MORIMOTO!!!!! He's so mysterious and hunky!

Yeah, I forgot that one. It also falls into the man's category, because then he won't be supporting someone elses genetic input.
I think alot of ED's are about control...From personal experience: Girls/women who have set standards for themselves that are unrealistic (looks, collage, relationships, careers) , often they have demanding,controlling mothers and more often they come from affluent or at least high middle class backgrounds and are very attractive- the one thing you feel totally control of in life is your weight so dieting becomes your secret little "fix" - the one thing that you feel you TOTALLY have a handle on. Until the weight loss becomes extreme most often you are looked at as a Pretty, together and accomplished.
I was bulemic as a teenager. I was never fat. I would not wish that hell on anybody.
As a 30ish woman I STILL have "issues" with my body and I'm 5'3 and flucuate between 115-123lbs. I no longer barf my food up (have not for over 15 years) - but I still have I deal with the urge to "starve" off the pounds once I hit 120. Its a on going battle and one that most of my friends and family have no idea about.
I've never been near the Serengeti, but I can make a spreadsheet like nobody's business. Does that count? :o)

As I peruse the Women’s magazines at the grocery check out, I can’t help but notice they all feature skinny female models – and the headline articles are about quick weight loss. For some reason they want to put forth the proposition that thin appeals to men.
Now look at the average Men’s magazine – be it a sport's, mechanic’s, home improvement or a “skin” mag. All of the women featured actually have hips and breasts! I have yet to see a skinny model in any of them.
LOL. I've always thought Bobby Flay would be an a55hole too. (Although I think I'm being a little prejudiced because of his Yankee accent).
Hmmmm, Emeril is cuddly, but his hair is too curly for my taste (and thinning on top).
Alton Brown does nothing for me.

I suspect those cultural preferences were still defined by evolutionary forces.
Even when rubenesque women were popular, those women showed that they were not suffering from any one of a zillion diseases that -- while curable today -- were not curable then.
