Concerns about Hollywood skinniness seem misplaced

We seem to be watching a horror show of too thin Hollywood actresses. Or at least that would be the observation of anyone who even skims the tabloids, talk shows or People Magazine...

I was shopping today (not for food, fortunately) when I saw this, um, person. She looked about 50something, 250lbs, wearing shorts and a tank top. To top it off, she had some kind of psoraisis or eczema all over her arms and legs.
If there was ever a need for someone to wear a burka....

I'm not picking on you for your comment but it keeps coming up on this thread. Not everyone that thinks Marilyn Monroe was fat is a gay man who likes 12 year old boys. Many normal men like myself and even great men like Ronald Reagan like thin women. By no means would I consider Marilyn Monroe an icon of beauty, at one point yes, but that may have been prior to breast augmentation when her attributes were rare.

"It would be nice to get that from women. Oh well." Some women are like that. You have to find them.
Hey najida, I have been trying not to post in this thread, I may rant and get in trouble. Thanks for the mail about the accident, I appreciate your concern.

Did you see the kitchen makeover she did for that young couple that won the Food Network contest? It aired Sunday night. It was beautiful...but the couple were soooooo laid back about it...they were 'wow, this is nice.' My family and I would have made for great TV...I would cried...my daughter said would have cried...we would have jumped up and down...oh yeah, we would LOVE a Paula Deen country kitchen redux at our house...

I think the reason these girls start down the road of thinking that things will be better if they can just get thinner is influenced significantly by the sea of seriously overweight people around them, most of whom are having trouble keeping various areas of their lives under control -- not just their weight. There's a fear of getting onto a slippery slope that others around them are obviously already on. And of course, the onset of severe eating disorders almost always occurs at an age when mentally maturing young women are starting to feel a natural need to exercise control over their own lives, while modern society postpones the feasibility of meaningful control for quite a few more years. Weight is one of the very few areas over which youth in this age range can actually exercise virtually complete control.

Beauty is ultimately in the eye of the beholder. It is those who set themselves up as arbitors of beauty (the fashion industry--the majority of which are gay men) who have basically presented the waif as the 'look.'
Sorry if you took offense...I happen to think MM was very pretty (in a movie star, larger than life way).

And any man who gets upset about being asked by a woman what he does for a living is probably just sensitive about still having a paper route at age 46. ;)Hey, leave me alone. I get pretty damn good tips on Christmas!

I've never seen this dude before, but my first impression is that he can make a woman laugh. That's gotten a lot of less-than-beefcakey guys laid throughout history. It's pretty much all I've got. :^(

What you eat (or don't eat) is the simplest thing for YOU to control. No one can make you eat (truly) if you don't want to...and no one can really stop you from over eating either. So for a young girl seeking order in the chaos she lives in, the simplest solution is to control what goes into her. She is controlling her body, her size. I don't really think their is a rationalization about the size of others...it is all about controlling their bodies/lives to a state of perfection.

I guess I'm off base. I saw a couple shows of his on PBS (I think) and one had him chatting with a childhood friend. He seemed kinda ... fruity in that episode. Maybe it was just that episode.
I like his show when I've seen it.

Seriously, though, Drew Carey, back before he was famous, was a stripper magnet. He made everyone around him laugh. That goes a long way.

I am not offended in the least. I just don't think the reason for the thin slide in models has anything to do with gay men. Sure the fashion industry has many gay men but it is run by women by a far margin. I promise you that if you take Joe Sixpack and show him a Victoria Secret catalog he will not put it down for a while. Now when you actually see those same women in real life they are extremely thin. Thin to the point that many men on here would be saying " I don't like that... she looks like a boy.... blah blah blah." They will say that all day long but I guarantee you Heidi Klume could have these same gentlemen crying inside of 10 days. I just take up for the skinny girls because I like them personally and I despise the immense amount of hatred directed at them by the heifers.
To: Modernman
I can only make people laugh in print. I'm horrible in real life.
I suppose if I carried a notepad around, scribbling furiously and having sheets of paper flying all over at every possible vector, I might have a shot.
