We seem to be watching a horror show of too thin Hollywood actresses. Or at least that would be the observation of anyone who even skims the tabloids, talk shows or People Magazine...

Isn't she great? I love both her 30-minute meals and her $40 a day shows (I forget the exact titles).
But you know, I wouldn't be surprised if some executive has told her she should lose a few pounds (something she definitely does NOT need to do). It seems that average women aren't good enough. Average men, yeah, but not average women.
Remember the big hubbub over one of the stars of Designing Women years ago? Supposedly she was quite fat, but somehow the male co-star of that TV show, a VERY hefty guy, was just fine. And just look at all the TV sitcoms featuring a fat-but-OK husband and a thin wife.
Somehow, in the land of TV and movies, it's OK for men to be average or even fat while women must be downright thin.
No one is really ignoring real weight problems in children, whether they're too fat or too skinny. But I always take anything labeled as an "epidemic" with a grain of salt, especially since that ridiculous "body mass index" that was touted for years actually showed such people as President Bush and Michael Jordan as being overweight.
Looking at her now, I just shake my head.
Women should care less about what homosexual fashion photographers think women should look like and more about what normal men find attractive.
They'd be happier.
An unintended byproduct of the PC world in which we live. When I was a kid (not that long ago in the 70's and 80's) a little shame went a loong way. There where very few kids or adults that were extremely obese, and the ones that were often REALLY did have a slow metabolism or a "glandular" problem or something like that. They may have gotten picked on in school or been the butt of jokes as an adult. Which I don't think is paticularly right, but the message was clear, it's shameful to be 5-100 lbs over weight. (Not to mention EXTREMELY unhealthy)
Now days I see kids and adults so fat that they would have made my jaw hit the floor when I was 12 or 13. There are huge, extremely, obese uncomfortable, unhealthy looking people EVERYWHERE. Being a big fat fatty (who obviously sits on ones butt all day long--eating) has lost the stigma that it once had, and is fast becoming the norm. It certainly makes me wonder if the problem would have ever reached such staggering proportions had being obese not lost its shame.
We are a culture of extremes. Agreed that childhood obesity is rampant,but so are ED's too. I bat about 75 obese consults for every 25 ED's.
Instead of a kid being happy the way they are, they're conditioned that they 'need to be thinner'. I've seen 7 year olds on 'diets' cuz they thought the were fat.
Then we have kids who can't lose weight no matter what because they've twerked their metabolisms...and they don't exercise....and parents have be overindulgent about food choices etc.
It is a majorly screwed mess.
My 22 yo daughter is considered overweight by some, who for some reason believe it's their place to remind her. I'm trying to help her see that it's her body, her image of what's suitable for her. And even--imagine this--she can choose what to eat.
Russians seem to eat a diet of potatos, breads, chocolates, mayonaise, fats, and lots of it. But there are so few fat people in Russia because they are able to walk. They don't go for walks...but when they have somewhere to go...they walk....to the store, to their friend's homes, to the cinema, etc.
American children are now so protected from criminals that they are not allowed to walk around their own neighborhoods in many cases.
Rachel Ray did a show in Hawaii a while back, and she was wearing shorts. When she sat down, her thighs did that "doubling in size and dimpling" thing that I thought only my thighs did upon sitting. It was a refreshing thing to see.

What looks good on TV doesn't necessarily look good in person, and vice versa. Whenever I've seen television personalities in the flesh, they look like stick figures, but they look fine on the screen. Normal, slim women tend to look fat on TV, so these actresses feel they need to go to an unhealthy extreme to look good. But I certainly haven't seen any evidence they are inspiring any dieting trends among young girls - trips to the mall tend to look like the picture above.

At least. And if the woman is 5'2" or under to begin with, ten pounds is a huge amount to try to lose for the camera.
