Looking south, the purple area marks where the ocean floor, which sits on the Indian tectonic plate, is pushing into, and moving under, the Burma plate. The Indonesian landmass sits atop the Burma plate. A rupture 30km below this area produced violent shaking, triggering the tsunami.

I just heard from my friend in Tokyo. She was sitting at her dining toom table when it occurred, and she said she worried for a second that her china cabinet would come down on her head. She said it was only slightly more rambunctious than the one in July, while we were there, but it went on for a little longer. She started feeling sick to her stomach from the rolling; she felt like she was on a roller coaster.
The one in July was smaller (about 3.0), but the epicenter was closer to Tokyo, I think. This was was far stronger, but much further away.
