Thanks for posting that photo of the people in the Bullet Train station. I think I'd rather walk than take the Bullet Train after a quake.

"Thanks for posting that photo of the people in the Bullet Train station. I think I'd rather walk than take the Bullet Train after a quake." A number of updated photos just came in:
Assisted by railway workers passengers get off from a stranded bullet train near Sendai Station in Sendai Tuesday, Aug. 16th, 2005 shortly after a powerful magnitude-7.2 earthquake struck northeastern Japan.
Shattered debris covers the floor of an indoor swimming pool in Sendai, northern Japan, where part of the ceiling collapsed after a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 jolted the area August 16th, 2005. The earthquake left at least 27 injured and caused power outages and snarled transportation.
Schoolchildren look at a house destroyed by a strong earthquake in Kazo, north of Tokyo, August 16th, 2005.
Injured people are given medical attention after part of the ceiling at an indoor swimming pool collapsed in Sendai, northern Japan, August 16th, 2005.
Rescuers inspect an indoor swimming pool scattered with ceiling boards broken into pieces in Sendai Tuesday, Aug. 16th, 2005.

The photo above was off a live video feed as the quake was underway.
=========================================================== Below is of interest from the BBC July 14th, 2005:
9.5 Asian quake tears 1,000km rupture
Looking south, the purple area marks where the ocean floor, which sits on the Indian tectonic plate, is pushing into, and moving under, the Burma plate. The Indonesian landmass sits atop the Burma plate. A rupture 30km below this area produced violent shaking, triggering the tsunami.

"What are you hearing, if anything?"
Nothing more than you are. I haven't been able to get to a radio or TV.
In Tokyo, though, it's business as usual.

"Owe me a monitor, damn you" Your playful monitor lizard has been shipped and should be under your bed now. Word of caution, they enjoy snacking on toes and fingers.

I just heard from my friend in Tokyo. She was sitting at her dining toom table when it occurred, and she said she worried for a second that her china cabinet would come down on her head. She said it was only slightly more rambunctious than the one in July, while we were there, but it went on for a little longer. She started feeling sick to her stomach from the rolling; she felt like she was on a roller coaster.
The one in July was smaller (about 3.0), but the epicenter was closer to Tokyo, I think. This was was far stronger, but much further away.
