Dean: Women in Iraq were better off under Saddam
Washington Times ^ | August 15, 2005

Posted on 08/15/2005 5:09:16 AM PDT by Grig

Dean's latest Howard Dean, the Democratic National Committee chairman who was the hero of his party's anti-war wing before his gaffe-prone 2004 presidential candidacy crashed and burned in Iowa, still doesn't think the Iraqis are better off with dictator Saddam Hussein out of power and in prison. Appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation" yesterday, the fiery former Vermont governor said, "It looks like today, and this could change, as of today it looks like women will be worse off in Iraq than they were when Saddam Hussein was president of Iraq." Mr. Dean was the guy who said right after Saddam was found hiding in a "spider hole" that his capture by U.S. troops "has not made America safer," a statement ridiculed and condemned by most of his Democratic rivals at the time. In a brief statement yesterday, the Republican National Committee said, "Dean's wild assertion that Iraqi women would be better off living under Saddam Hussein than democracy is not only counterproductive to meaningful debate, it demeans the hard work of American servicemen and women serving in Iraq."

...biggest wish: That this SOB POS would go to Iraq and seek "understanding," Afghanistan just as his dead brother went to Southeast Asia during the "Peace and Love" era; on second thought, check that, may the Dems be forever hung with this albatross around their RAT necks!

Well, how interesting that the DNC's official position is support of rape, murder, dismemberment, beheading of Iraqi women as opposed to relative freedom.

Yep, the Democrats prove once again that they're for the "little guy." (/s)

While the rape rooms were good, I think the being-fed-into-woodchippers-feet-first thing was really the best.

And we dared to take that away from Iraqi women. The shame!

I wonder if the SeeBS showhost challenged him, agreed, or let it slide?

Nonetheless, Dr. Dizzy Dean is the best thing to happen to conservatives in decades, LOL!

Oh yeah, I am sure the women of Iraq loved those rape rooms.

The favored group and tribes did allow their women quite a lot during the Saddam reign of terror.
They were much freer than Muslim women in many other countries.

Dean is so stupid to suggest that all Iraqi women in general, including the Shia and the Kurds and any non-compliant Sunni as well, would have received similar treatment.

Exactly the opposite was true for the majority of women, because the favored Sunni were a minority and the favored tribes were a minority within that minority. They became the face of Iraqi women to the outside world, however stupid that was.

The rest of the women were subject to the torture chambers, the rape rooms and the mass graves. Not to mention Uday Hussein.

The left's fear (or is it hope?) is that Iraq will become a Sharia based country like Saudi Arabia or, more likely, Iran. Sadaam and his boys tortured women, but at least on paper, women had more legal rights than in other Muslim countries, and apparently did sometimes occupy higher social roles in business, science, and even the military. The rationale is that it's all relative, that Sadaam was bad, that what may come will be even worse for women.

That's a rational point, but that is an argument for our further occupation, until we can ensure a secular government.

So either Dean wants us to stay and ensure that form of government, or he is a hypocrite.

Go Howard go. When buried in dirt, he just keeps digging.
Either that or he may be off his meds.

I was distressed when McAwful's tenure as grand poobah of the DNC passed. He was so disastrous for the Dems that I often wondered if he were a plant on the RNC payroll.

I was afraid that someone competent would take his place and give the Dems a chance at winning back the House or Senate. Now, I think Dean will be just as good for our side as McAwful.

I was thinking that someone like Rush who has a complete library of sound bites on everything could easily pump out a book on old Howie.

Felos? sure, but I don't know a lot about him. I'm still learning politics everyday here on FR but I have so much more to learn.

"Dean's wild assertion that Iraqi women would be better off living under Saddam Hussein than democracy is not only counter productive to meaningful debate, it demeans the hard work of American men and women serving in Iraq."

Yawn....zzzzzz......

The RNC will never get any awards for snappy answers to wild assertions and lies by leading Dems. I make it a point to study RNC rebuttals. Seems they are written by a guy named William Jennings Bryan perched on a stool in the nether recesses of the building, scratching away with feather pen and foolscap.

As evinced by this thread, freepers should be hired to compose answers to crazies like Dean because freeper wit and stilletos would actually create some attention from the public and in the media.

"Women in Iraq were better off under Saddam"

The only way we will know for sure is to ask the women who were under Saddam while they were being raped is if they thought they were better off. Most likely the answer would be, "No I wasn't better off under Saddam, amd if I had a choice I would have preferred Saddam better off."

My husband, during his first deployment to Iraq, got a private tour of one of Uday's former palaces that had been converted into a Army base of operations. The palace had been occupied very early by the Army (the higher-ups), and so had never been looted...meaning that this palace was complete with gilded doors and crystal chandeliers, and hundreds of $3,000 bottles of chardonnay. My hubby reports that walked into a room which contained boxes full of stereos, and asked the officer giving the tour what was their purpose. Apparently, the stereos were consolation prizes for the women that were forced to satisfy the lustful urges of Uday...and all of his friends.

I guess Dr. Dean things that a stereo is good payment for having been gang-raped.

"An argument for our further occupation, until we can ensure a secular government."

I think that what Arab countries need more than anything else is separation of church and state, but almost no Arabs are ready to accept that. If we stay until they are ready (and maybe we should) it will probably be a long time. That raises the question of whether we have the political will to do so. Sadly, we probably won't have that political will until we are struck again hard.
