Monday - August 15 - Solidarity with Cindy Sheehan
Cindy Sheehan is camped out in the hot desert sun, speaking out about the occupations of Iraq and Palestine and demanding answers from the criminal regime that killed her son along with more than 1800 other soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqi people. She has vowed to stay at the roadside encampment, called Camp Casey, until she meets with the President or is arrested.
On Monday, August 15 antiwar activists, veterans, community organizers, and military families will gather in Union Square for a demonstration of solidarity with Cindy Sheehan. In New York City, we will gather in Union Square in Manhattan at 5:00 pm for a "Camp Casey - NYC." The Troops Out Now Coalition has called on local activists everywhere to demonstrate their solidarity with Cindy Sheehan on Monday
This will also be the day that the U.S.-appointed regime in Baghdad is scheduled to announce its new constitution, a reactionary document forced on the people of Iraq at gunpoint. August 15 is also the day that occupation forces are scheduled to withdraw from Gaza. This will be an excellent day, not only to stand in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan, but to echo her statement: "" I want him to tell me is just what was the noble cause Casey died for?? Was it freedom and democracy? Bullshit! He died for oil. He died to make your friends richer. He died to expand American imperialism in the Middle East. We're not freer here, thanks to your PATRIOT Act. Iraq is not free. You get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine and you'll stop the terrorism. There, I used the 'I' word imperialism, and now I'm going to use another 'I'word impeachment because we cannot have these people pardoned. They need to be tried on war crimes and go to jail.
You might think that with all the coverage, that a support Cindy Sheehan demonstration in New York City would draw possibly hundreds, possibly thousands of anti-war protestors. Not so.
I often stop by the Leftist gatherings in Union Square to annoy the Commies. This evening, I arrived at Union Square at 5:30. There were maybe 50 demonstrators and 20 or so others milling around the periphery.
But despite a Camp Cindy sign (shouldnt it have been Camp Casey?), demonstrators were not the new face of anti-war protest crowd. The speaker was condeming the death penalty and that a million people on Death Row are executed in Texas every minute (or whatever her statistics were). She eventually got on track and tried to get a chant going: Shut down the war. Bring the troops home. The crowd came to life momentarily but it quickly died out. I snickered loudly.
The Workers of the World people (aka, Commies) were there, offering leaflets to whoever stopped to see what was going on. I had fun annoying them: scrawny lesbos and earnest dweebs in suits and ponytails.
An old hippie had a "No Draft" sign. Some guy who had dyed his eyebrows orange was trying to hand out cards to present to the police. The cards read: I do not consent to be searched. And, of course, there was a big sign reading: Stop Bush with the s in Bush spelled as a swastika.
I told the swastika guy that he was an idiot and a passer-by voiced his agreement with me. Swastika guy replied that Bush planned 9-11, that it was just like Hitler and the Reichstag, that no airplanes were hijacked on 9-11. This didnt win over any sympathy amongst the spectators.
I left around 6:00 (before a chick with a guitar started to sing). From what I saw, "Camp Cindy" failed to draw a meaningful crowd or any new converts.
Thanks - sounds like it was pretty pathetic - just like you predicted!
By the way, I think I figured out why Leftists say Bush is Hitler. All their heroes (Mao, Stalin, Ho Chi Minh) turned out to be the worst mass murderers in history. In a weird kind of transference, the Leftists accuse the President of the United States as being a mass murderer as a salve to their own twisted psyches.
At some point in the future, this poor woman is going to seriously regret alientating all of her real friends and her family and destroying her life, just for a fleeting moment of fame. The vile lot that she's thrown in with don't give a rat's behind about her and will eventually forget all about her and "move on".
To think, our soldiers and our constitution give these freaks the freedoms and the right to speak of our country and the rest of us like this. It's infuriating, yet they have that right. Facts totally lost on them.
Too bad I didn't pick up on this earlier. It would have been fun to have gone down to the St. Mark's zoo and see the exhibits (orange eyebrows?). Sounds like a fizzle, though - not too different from the usual flotsam prevalent in Union Square.
Next time, maybe we'll try to have ourselves a mini-Freep. Could be fun!
Palestine? Palestine? Where's that? Never knew it was a country.
Don't know if you saw this, but there will be a "candlelight vigil" in Union Square tonight at 7:30. I can't make the scene but thought you might like to know.

I wish I could have made it, but I got swamped at the office. Next time...
