Worth his weight in gold

By Dimitri Vassilaros

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Sunday, August 14, 2005

Typically, the Arizona Republican gubernatorial primary is of little interest outside the 48th state -- especially when the race has more than a year to go. But this election is atypical because one of the candidates is more than a Goldwater Republican.

He is a Republican named Goldwater.

Candidate Don Goldwater, 50, is the nephew of Barry Goldwater. Don Goldwater's uncle died in 1998 after being a U.S. senator, presidential candidate, and ultimately the conscience of the Republican Party.

If this married father of two should become governor, his victory would create a golden opportunity for the Republican Party nationwide to rediscover its principles.

Barry Goldwater's principled positions on limited government as defined by the Constitution were the fountainhead for two political movements -- one large, one small.

Sun Belt conservatives like Ronald Reagan who now are a dominant force in the party can trace their origins to Goldwater's landslide loss in 1964 when he offered America a choice instead of an echo.

Goldwater supporters along with liberals opposed to the Vietnam War also created the Libertarian Party in 1971. While it has a much lower profile than the other two, it claims to be the third largest party in the republic.

This Mr. Goldwater is running on more than pedigree. His candidacy is rooted in core conservative positions, ones that would have made his uncle proud. And that could be a template for other Republicans who also want to offer a choice and not an echo.

The nephew learned much from his uncle.

"Individual liberty, self-reliance and your word is your bond," Don Goldwater said.

His uncle also said "the law is the law. If you choose not to enforce it, take it off the books.".......

I am working on it, good FRiend.

Here's a excerpt from The Arizona Conservative...

GOLDWATER SAYS HE'S PRO-LIFE
July 30, 2005

Soon to be announced GOP gubernatorial candidate Don Goldwater has informed The Arizona Conservative that he is pro-life. Earlier in the day, a reliable source told us he was pro-choice, but that was later disputed.

"My views are pretty straight forward," Goldwater told The Arizona Conservative Saturday night in an email message. "I am pro-life with a few exceptions. My exceptions are:

"An abortion can only be considered in cases of rape or incest and only before viability of the fetus. The only other exception would be in the case of mortal danger to the mother."

Mr. Goldwater, the nephew of the late Barry Goldwater, is vying for the Republican Party's nomination to oppose Democrat incumbent Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Watch The Arizona Conservative in the days ahead for a full interview with Mr. Goldwater on a range of topics relevant to the governor's race.

====
I'll get that interview up as soon as it goes up on AZConservative provided the big guns here in AZ don't beat me to it.

Thanks Cowboy! I was 17 and not at all political when Barry Goldwater ran for president.

Over the years since,I have come to greatly admire the man.

I'm hoping this Don Goldwater is the real deal.Plus it would be great for us to add another state governor to the R column! ;)

You and I are both hoping for this.

I admire Goldwater as well.

You'd better keep an eye on Fast Eddie back there. I'm an old Pennsylvania man myself.

Alot of us vets around here would like to tar & feather Fast Eddie and his sidekick and then run em both out of town on a rail for the shame they've brought to the commonwealth.

But anyhoo, this sounds good about Goldwater!

Name identification and money top the list of prerequisites for political success.

Cowboy, your own guns are getting pretty big, too. This is a good find...and putting out the interview will help a lot.

The FReepers who've met Don all say good things about him. And La Gubernadora is working overtime to get herself defeated. This is going to be an interesting race.

I met Mr. Goldwater last year at the RNC Convention in NYC. He was in charge of our (AZ) community project, and we all heard from him consistently via e-mail prior to the convention to convince us to get involved (the project was voluntary).

He did a great job, and those of us who participated learned a lot.

He is a solid conservative and a great guy.
