This "new" anti-Americanism from the mother country is so ironic that I can't help but laugh and ridicule the Poms. It was not too long ago (until WWII) that there was an "old" anti-Americanism in their land. The only difference was that at the time the "old" anti-Americanism was to look down on America as the barbarian un-cultured nouvelle riches.

Hey Pommies, your great-great-great-grandfathers built the British Empire, your grandfathers ran the Empire, and you still admire their accomplishments today, and yet you now say the US is imperialist and therefore must be bad?

Hullo Kiwi.

I think that you have to be a bit more precise about which sectors of Brit society are 'Anti-US'.

Traditionally, politics-wise, it has always been the Labour Party/Socialists who have disliked the US (which is pretty bizarre, given that Tony Blair presently heads the Labour Party and seems to be feted by a lot of U citizens on this site). The grassroots Labour has always hated the US - pure envy because its vaunted Socialism has been seen to be a crock. Liberal Democrats are anti US, anti war, anti everything and not worth any more space here.

It is only the Conservative Party that has traditionally been the great ally of the US and the American people. We still stand firm, and we are still out of line enough to rightly admire our colonial history, warts and all. We were doing what we reckoned was right, just as the US is doing today, despite the usual envy and idealistic/socialist/communist/liberal opposition. But the Conservative Party lies in ruins, having adopted the way of political correctness and multiculti which have reduced our once proud nation to the mere shadow of its former self.

The Conservative Party needs to return to its conservative values, not try to steal New Labour's clothes. Unfortunately in this country, over the last 20 years the liberati 'great and good' have gained firm footholds in the education system and have preached the reconstructed history of our country. We are firmly back in the days of Neville Chamberlain and a nation of compromise and appeasement, having been severely infected by Europe. To have any strong opinions in this country nowadays is not 'cool'. It is only cool to be 'laid back' and care about nothing - as long as no-one makes any waves we will all get on together. Well, waves have been made this July in London, I am very seriously concerned that we have lost the guts to do what has to be done.
By the way, Kiwi, wothcher 'gonna do about the gorgeous Helen Clark??? (and your very own Islamic threat?) ABs trashed the Aussies 30-13 in the Tri Nations footie- brilliant, maybe we can trip em up in the Cricket, just for once.
