Sheehan Responds to Her Family's Criticism
Vallejo Times Herald ^ | Saturday, August 13, 2005 | Robin Miller and AP

Posted on 08/13/2005 9:39:03 AM PDT by kristinn

Vacaville anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan noted Friday that some family members are "disagreeing with me in strong terms, which is totally okay with me, because they barely knew Casey.'

She was referring to her late son, Casey Sheehan, 24, who was killed in Iraq in April 2004. Sheehan's 48-year-old mother has been camped for days near Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch insisting on another face-to-face meeting with the president to protest the war. Sheehan and her family met with Bush in June 2004, but opted then not to question him about the war nor chastise him.

"We have always been on separate sides of the fence politically and I have not spoken to them since the elections when they supported the man who is responsible for Casey's death,' Sheehan wrote in her weblog about her in-laws. "The thing that matters to me is that my family - Casey's dad and my other three kids - are on the same side of the fence that I am.'

Sheehan told a reporter for an Austin, Texas, newspaper that she and her

husband, Patrick, have separated but said, "We both are handling our grief differently,' according to the newspaper.

"He agrees with the philosophy behind what I'm doing, that the war was wrong and George Bush lied, but he doesn't understand that I have a passion that I have to do this and this is the only way. If I can shorten the war by one minute and save one life, that would just give me so much comfort in my grief.'

Patrick Sheehan has declined to comment publicly about his wife's efforts. His family, however, issued a terse e-mailed comment on Thursday.

"We do not agree with the political motivations and publicity tactics of Cindy Sheehan. She now appears to be promoting her own personal agenda and notoriety at the expense of her son's good name and reputation,' read the e-mail signed by Casey's aunt Cherie Quartarolo on behalf of his paternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

"The Sheehan family lost our beloved Casey in the Iraq War and we have been silently, respectfully grieving,' the e-mail stated. "The rest of the Sheehan family supports the troops, our country and our president, silently, with prayer and respect.'

Meanwhile on Friday, President Bush and his motorcade passed the growing camp of war protesters outside his ranch without incident. As Bush passed on his way to and from a political fundraiser, law enforcement blocked two intersecting roads where the demonstrators have camped out all week. Officers required the group to stand behind yellow tape, but no one was asked to leave.

The motorcade didn't stop.

Sheehan held a sign that read: "Why do you make time for donors and not for me?'

It was unclear whether Bush, riding in a black Suburban with tinted windows, saw the demonstrators.

After years of plugging away as a soldier in the peace movement, Cindy has finally reached the exalted state of Celebrityhood. And if it costs her heroic son's reputation and her marriage- so what?- just keep the tape rolling. After all, your time only comes around once in a lifetime.

Yesterday's thread:
Cindy Sheehan's response to family criticism

And the response to Cindy "Dingbat" Sheehan

The protesting 48-year-old mother of a soldier killed in Iraq noted the admonition came from her in-laws who were "disagreeing with me in strong terms; which is totally okay with me, because they barely knew Casey,'.

Barely knew him, huh?

April 10, 2004:

Local family mourns death of soldier, nephew By John Lindblom - Record-Bee staff

LAKEPORT That far-off war in Iraq came to Lake County this past week. It was an invasion of sadness that left a hole as big as a crater in a family.

U.S. Army specialist Casey Sheehan, the godson and nephew of Lakeport chiropractor Peter Quartarolo and his wife and aide Cherie, was that good. That strong a character. That loved.

And then, suddenly, less than two weeks after arriving in Iraq, he was dead. An American military casualty killed in a fierce firefight just outside southern Baghdad that was reported as the worst in terms of losses for American forces since the Iraqi capital was captured a year ago.

Seven other soldiers were killed with Casey. So far, 600 Americans have died in Iraq.

"What stands out to me was how devoted he was to his faith," said Cherie. "He was an altar boy, a youth minister, an adult deacon and a Eucharistic minister in the service.

"I thought he would become a priest, but he also wanted to have children and a family."

Sheehan lived in Vacaville, a town that mourned his passing this past week with flags at half-mast, prayers, and a mixed sense of grief and pride by family and friends.

"His family is bearing up because they're proud of him and want him to live in memory and memorialize him as a hero," Cheri asserted, "but in private they're grieving heavily."

In the death of the 24-year-old Sheehan a family lost one of its four children (two sons, two daughters), an honor student, thespian, Eagle Scout, committed soldier and, as his one of his sisters called him, "the strong, silent type a rock."

"He reenlisted in the Army last August after a three-year tour because he wanted to become an officer or have a career in the military," Cherie Quartarolo said of her deceased nephew.

Sheehan frequently came to Lake County and to his aunt and uncle's acreage in Kelseyville "because he liked the outdoors a lot."

As an Eagle Scout, Sheehan spearheaded a project to plant 1,100 trees on Table Mountain in the Angeles National Forest, a remote area favored by campers and hikers.

The end for Sheehan came when a Shiite militia group attacked his convoy with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Sheehan, it is believed, was driving a Humvee when he was hit.

"I searched my memory," said Cherie, "and, no, he never gave his parents any trouble. He always led by example. He was just always good."

Cindy Sheehan busted AGAIN.

she might as well pack up and head for the White House and camp out there for the rest of his Presidency....because he is not going to see her again...come hell or high water.

I agree. George is a very strong man both mentally and physically. I think he knows left-wing intimidation tactics when he sees them and does not cow tow to them.

Why doesn't she take her shenanigans to IRAQ and talk to the Muzzies. They started it.

A fact conveniently forgotten.

What a jerk this woman is. But she wouldn't be where she is now were it not for the loving support of the press and the MSM.

Simplistically, she reduces the war to one theatre, as if even the pacification of Iraq and withdrawal of troops would end the large war, which is against religious fanatics who are found whereever Muslims are to be found.

Considering that the son reinlisted, and volunteered for the dangerous mission that cost him his life, it sounds to me as that SHE is the one that "barely knew Casey".

I question her truthfulness, too. I heard her say on CNN that she decided "Bush lied" about why we went to war after she read the 9-11 report, Dulfer report, Intelligence Committee report and possibly the Kaye report. I do not believe for one minute that she read any of these reports. Perhaps she read the NY Times headlines ABOUT the reports. Because if she'd read the actual reports, she would have seen that all of them say Saddam was on his way to getting nukes, even if he didn't have them now, and that the sanctions were eroding and would soon be gone, and then it would be open slather for him.

Well, then, which story is true? The one originally published by your local rag (http://www.thereporter.com/search/ci_2923921) or the bullsh_t you're currently spouting, you f'in nutcase? WHO's lying again? Even your FAMILY is telling you to STFU.

It's a shame your Son died, and I extend my condolences to the REST of His family; YOU, on the other hand...

Gee, I wonder why THAT is. Could it be because he was sick and tired of dealing with a crackpot who's so obsessed with her own political agenda that she'll oppose her entire family and her son's sacrifice for it?

they barely knew Casey.

Sister Carley knew Casey much better than Mommy Dearest knew Casey, who reinlisted when Mommy wanted him to go to Canada:

Carly Sheehan said her brother was active in his Catholic church, spending 10 years as an altar server and serving in the youth ministry.

"That's all he wanted to do was serve God and his country his whole life," Carly Sheehan said. "He was a boy scout from age 6 or 7 and an Eagle Scout. It was kind of a natural progression to go into the military from that. He said he was enjoying the military because it was just like the boy scouts but they got guns."

This crusade of Sheehan's hasn't cost her son's reputation, hasn't affected it in the least, and can't affect it. He died for his country, doing the work deemed necessary for our defense by our president and his advisors. Her son died bravely for a good cause. NOTHING she can do will ever change that.

So true, but "boy scouts with guns" is what the good guys tell their adoring sisters; been there, done that.

Mommy's lying. Carly is honoring the fallen hero for whom she grieves, and deserves our respect, comfort, and prayers as we join her.

Sheehan has allied herself with some very incompetent and ignorant political operatives (the Democratic Party).

She probably very well believes 90% of what she says, except that she alters the point of view, tense, and details to give her statements more authority.

You see this phenomena at large car accidents, fires, natural disasters... People exaggerate their role, or the extent of their first hand observation, and eventually the story where they filled in the blanks becomes more practiced and eventually it becomes as real as fact to them.

I say she's being artificially reinforced, with a lot of very rich and influential people giving her emotional and intellectual vindication, by the very fact that they appear to be taking her seriously. Couple this with a lot of bad information, incomplete facts, and inherent bias within herself and in her preferred sources, and she becomes exactly what is now.
