No Evidence Pentagon Knew of Atta, Panel Says

9/11 Probers Reject Claims on Lead Hijacker

Investigators for the Sept. 11 commission have found no evidence to support allegations by a House Republican that lead hijacker Mohamed Atta was identified by a classified Pentagon program before the 2001 attacks, according to a commission statement issued last night.

Commission leaders Thomas H. Kean (R) and Lee H. Hamilton (D) said in the joint statement that panel staff members have found no documents or other witnesses to back up claims made by a U.S. Navy officer, who told the commission staff in July 2004 that he recalled seeing Atta's name and photograph on a chart prepared by another officer. Panel officials also said they have found no evidence to support similar claims made to reporters by a second person, a former defense intelligence official.

"None of the documents turned over to the commission mention Mohamed Atta or any of the other future hijackers," the commission statement said. "Nor do any of the staff notes on documents reviewed in the [Defense Department] reading room indicate that Mohamed Atta or any of the other future hijackers were mentioned in any of those documents."

The statement marks the latest development in several days of public skirmishing between the commission and Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), who accused the panel of ignoring allegations that Atta and other hijackers had been identified by Pentagon analysts before the Sept. 11 attacks but that the information had not been shared with other agencies.

..."the commission staff concluded that the officer's account was not sufficiently reliable to warrant revision of the report or further investigation."

The Able Danger program is also not mentioned in the final report because "the operation itself did not turn out to be historically significant," the statement said.

The Able Danger program is also not mentioned in the final report because "the operation itself did not turn out to be historically significant," the statement said.

So even if it didn't find any results, the report never mentions the program created to find terrorists in a commission report about finding terrorists?

These commissioners must have real gullible spouses--"No, honey, even though she calls at all hours and hangs up when you answer, and you found some love letters from her, and one of her shoes in my car, I didn't feel the need to mention her because we're just good friends!"

Regardless, the smell of this bodes not well for the credibility of the 911 Commission.

Did they make any effort at all to look?

My guess is that they instantly went into cover-up mode
when Atta's name came up.

This does not even come close to passing the smell test.

OBTW: Is that the same reading room where Burger was stuffing his pants?

You'll notice they do not deny the charge. They claim they have not found any evidence that the charge is true.

Finding evidence depends on where you look. If one only looks in the living room, one will not find any evidence of what took place in the kitchen.

The claim of not finding evidence is lawyer bull crap for we are guilty as hell!!!

Psst: The notes are at Sandy Berger's house. Look in his socks drawer.

So there wasn't a second officer (Army?) and there were NO documents provided. Somebody is lying. I wonder who, and I wonder why.

It sounds to me like they are saying that an officer lied to them. Was this officer under oath? Leaves more questions for the chairpersons than answers to me.

YES!! It's all starting to fit together, isn't it?

I wish there was a legal way to see $$deposits into Berger's account, Cindy whosis's account, and a few others - and where it came from.

How much is it worth to cover up a major security failure caused by a MAJOR political figure, if it might mean doing some prison time?

Who has a greater incentive to lie? The officer or the staffers? I think the motive is to lie is with the staffers whose veracity and judgement is now on the line. And if the staffers wanted to cover up Able Danger would they leave behind detailed notes of the meeting?

And for those who asked, Berger took the stuff from the National Archives, not the DoD.

Did you hear Catherine Herridge say that the 9/11 Commission released its statement denouncing this evidence late Friday afternoon---"a normal practice for releasing bad news"...LOLOLOL

Weldon up soon! They have pretty much called him either a liar or cuckoo...for including this evidence in his book and on the House floor!
