More PC bullsqueese.
The is nothing, NOTHING, anyone can do or say these days that won't "offend" someone.
There is NO Constitutional right to not be offended.
Methinks the NCAA is going to face a shizstorm over this; possibly losing numerous member schools.
bump
Actually it is neat to have this phony "sensitivity" exposed to the public. I am from Illinois, land of the Illini Indians. Not too far from me the Apache helicopter is manufactured and repaired. I think the Comanche helicopter was cancelled. They should rename the helicopter The Wuss in honor of the NCAA committee.
The vast majority of people I know have a profound respect for American Indians. I often teach members of various tribes in college classes.
I demand they get rid of the "Fighting Irish"!!!!!!!
What about the Cleveland State Vikings?
maybe LSU should go back to their original nickname...
In cases where the Injuns have no beef with it, why should NCAA. Who they trying to please?
"What about the Cleveland State Vikings?"
What about the Cleveland Indians? Or the fact that "Ohio" means "beautiful" in the Chippewa (or Obijwa)language. Good grief!! Where does it stop?
For that matter, ban the Redskins! It offends Indians because it has an indian logo, and it offends Southerners because it sounds like 'redneck'! /sarc off
There is no good response to this letter. If the NCAA tries to respond, they will only make themselves look even sillier than they already do. At this point, their best defense is to drop the subject and retreat.
Nuclear letter!
Obijwa = Ojibwe (typing too late and too fast)
"By the way, the last time this issue was stirred up on our campus, a formal charge was made to the Office for Civil Rights that the use of our logo or nickname created a hostile environment here at the University. The Office for Civil Rights sent a half-dozen people to our campus. They fanned out across campus and after more than a week here, found no such thing. Did the Executive Committee find some things they missed, perhaps? Or does a committee in INDIANAPOLIS trump the Office for Civil Rights here, on the ground, in North Dakota?"
The NCAA must leave INDIANapolis, I'D suggest LIBERAL,KS for the NEW HQ.
Miles Brand is a major jerk and he is getting a million dollar a year salary.
The Redskins are already a target.
I can't imagine how they would do that, but maybe they'll find a way.
No, I'm terribly sorry, but that just won't work. From a Kansas history website: "Kansas was named for Konza (also called Kansa or Kaw) Indians who lived in the area."
Perhaps New Jersey or New York...maybe Rhode Island; the rest of our country unfortunately seems to be politically incorrect.
