Love your screen name. I'm a major Jose Marti fan myself.
St. Louis is a deceptive case. The city and county are split into separate governments-- the city overwhelmingly Dem, the county much stronger Republican. Depending on how they calculate statistics, it can be deceptive of the area as a whole-- it is NOT more liberal than New York.
I look at it as a guide of where:
1.) not to shop.
2.) to stop in the event nature calls.
3.) the IQ of the general population is lower.
4.) bitterness and pain are prized attributes.
5.) a mild preview of hell is available.
So, as a rule, I agree!
Dallas but not Austin or Houston? That's got to be a misprint.
I think #44 needs to be clarified. While Springfield is not exactly conservative, it would appear so compared to nearby Amherst/Northampton, home to UMASS and Smith College (and the other three colleges in the area).
The level of liberal infestation is at pandemic levels there.
I guess they were doing the biggest cities in the area, but even then, as a person who has lived in both areas, Amherst/Northampton could easily bump Boston from its lofty position.
** ALWAYS CARRY A FIREARM IN THE TOP TWENTY FOR SELF DEFENSE **
I take issue with Birmingham and New Orleans being listed so highly here.
Birmingham and New Orleans are not liberal, they are black, and there is a difference. The votes the Democrats get there, they get because African-Americans vote straight Democratic tickets.
Birmingham is something like 71% black, and New Orleans is roughly the same. Take those two numbers, and combine this with voting percentage, and you realize, it's not ideology that drives this, it's ethnic block voting, if the Republicans can make some good gains among black voters, you'll see those margins disappear real quickly
Dallas is not liberal at all; not if you consider the Metroplex. The city limits contain a preponderance of minorities who, unfortunately, think democrats are the best choice. Dallas is surrounded by huge satellite cities: Plano, Richardson, Garland, Irving, and so on, all of which are heavily conservative.
No Madison, WI?
Ummm HELLO?! Where the hell is Boulder, CO? It's far more liberal than the other CO cities listed.
Absolutely!
Same thing with Richmond, VA (my current home) and Columbia, SC (my previous home); high minority populations = more liberal. In both places, there is a direct correlation between percentage of black voters and just how "blue" an area is. Columbia sits in the midst of two counties; Richland (north and east) has a high minority population and is mildly blue; Lexington (west and south) has a lower black population and is one of the reddest counties in the state.
Interestingly enough, the city of Richmond (#50) just elected Douglas Wilder, Virginia's first black governor, as mayor. Wilder is a Rat, but he is less liberal than most, and surprisingly conservative fiscally. I don't really like him that much since he's also arrogant as hell, but he's an independent thinker in a lot of areas, and Richmond could've done much worse (i.e., elected a Kwame Kilpatrick clone).

Judging by the size of the other cities on the last, I'll bet the Chapel Hill Soviet Socialist Republic was too small, unless they lumped it under Durham.
