Tancredo makes 'dent' in N.H.

Presidential poll gives Colo. congressman 1%

WASHINGTON - It's official: Rep. Tom Tancredo is a blip on the 2008 presidential radar.

Tom Tancredo's name was misspelled on survey group's Web site.

A new poll shows Tancredo, a Littleton Republican, pulling 1 percent of the vote in New Hampshire, home of the traditional first-in-the-nation presidential primary election.

American Research Group Inc. surveyed 600 likely Republican primary voters - including 433 Republicans and 167 undeclared voters - from Aug. 5 to 7.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., led with 39 percent, followed by "undecided" at 32 percent. Among others: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia drew 14 percent; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 8 percent; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, 5 percent; and Tancredo was tied with Sen. George Allen of Virginia, at 1 percent.

Three other possible contenders - Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Sens. Sam Brownback of Kansas and Chuck Hagel of Nebraska - did not register any support.

Tancredo has been testing the waters in New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina, saying he hopes to pressure bigger-name candidates to take up his crusade against illegal immigration.

The poll reveals a name recognition issue Tancredo must overcome. His name was spelled incorrectly (as "Tancrado") on the survey group's Web site, www.ameri canresearchgroup.com.

"We've got a phonetics issue I guess," Tancredo spokesman Will Adams joked. "In any case, he has made a dent in New Hampshire. For a congressman from suburban Colorado, it's a small step but a first step."

Tancredo received less than half of 1 percent support in a survey of 600 likely Republican primary voters in neighboring Massachusetts, where McCain led the field with 46 percent.

I hope he doesnt either, i would prefer somebody more conservative. all im saying is that given a choice between him and hillary i would choose him. im not going to throw my vote away to a third party like in 1992 with ross perot and let hillary clinton win just to make a point that i dont like McCain.

Everyone in their right mind would hold their nose and vote for him in that situation, I just don't want to force my mind to entertain something so traumatic.

McCain voted for CAFTA, so I guess you find yourself in good company.

So did Tom Delay.

BTW, I wouldn't vote for either tancredo or mccain. They both are self-aggrandizing news hounds, IMO.

Maybe you should go back to 'backstab Delay'.

The Tancredo=communist isn't really grabbing people.

They're probably all from Dane.

Nope just one, "fidelsgoodfriend" is mine.

Unlike you guys I don't go after posters on FR personally in the keyword section, as some tancredo supporters have been wont to do towards me.

" we need to rally around McCain if he does indeed turn out to be the nominee"

YOU can rally around McCain. if he is the nominee, I will vote third party or maybe just write in Tom Tancredo's name.

Anyone who protests Tancredo, even on internet news forums, has got to be a leftist of some kind or another.

I got a question for you: who would you vote for if the primary was just between John McCain and Tom Tancredo?

Well that's a hypothetical that probably won't happen since there probably would be other candidates.

I'll say that I wouldn't be very happy with either one.

sorry but there are many more important things than what he looks like, such as what he stands for.

Looks don't matter to about 35% of the electorate....it is that other 15% that wins elections that care about looks...

In Tancredo's mind, that means he is winning in a landslide. After all, he says that he is winning the immigration battle in Congress because he is able to kill every bit of legislation that could improve border control.

im not really sure about that. how do you figure mccain is more insane than Hillary? Hillary desires world wide socialist domination, i think thats a little more insane than occasionally not acting republican
