NEW HAMPSHIRE holds the first presidential primary every four years, and a candidate's showing there can make or break his or her bid for the White House. Now this small state may be at the forefront of a trend that will change national policy toward illegal immigrants.

Forget closing the door...it needs to be slammed shut.
In contrast, W. Garrett Chamberlain, police chief of New Ipswich, N.H., has garnered widespread attention by arresting them even when politically correct jurisdictions turn a blind eye to their presence.
Specifically, he charges them with "criminal trespass." New Hampshire law states that "a person is guilty of criminal trespass if, knowing he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he enters or remains in any place." Conviction carries a fine of up to $1,000.
In response to his action, the police chief has received an avalanche of positive communications from soldiers and law enforcement personnel around the world.
In fact, the popularity of the move has prompted Richard E. Gendron, the police chief in nearby Hudson, to follow Chief Chamberlain's example. He charged two illegal aliens from Mexico with trespassing after their van was stopped with a broken headlight.
Not everyone endorses these actions. "The Mexican government was understandably worried that this could become the charge du jour across the country," said Claire Ebel, executive director of the New Hampshire affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union.
In addition, the Mexican Consulate has hired an attorney for José Mora Ramirez, 21, who was apprehended for trespassing in New Ipswich. Mexican officials fear that his conviction could set a national precedent.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Mexican-American who has an eye on succeeding President Bush in 2008, recently told journalists that legal action toward illegal immigrants "should be done by federal law enforcement. This should not be done by local police chiefs."
The objections of Mr. Richardson aside, why have Chief Chamberlain and Chief Gendron won more bouquets than brickbats for their crackdown?

In addition, Mexicans believe they have every right to cross the border. This sentiment was evident in the results of a Zogby survey of Mexicans taken in May 2001. The pollsters asked: "Do you agree or disagree that the territory of the U.S. Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico?" Fifty-eight percent of the respondents agreed, 28 percent disagreed, and 14 percent said they were not sure.
I hope they will but...the disease has been migrating into New Hampshire from Vermont for a while now. They are not the great conservative state they once were. Didn't I see an American general officer standing on a stage with M. Moore last primary election season? Yeah I'm sure I did. There was a time when the people of New Hampshire would have shunned Moore, but not now.
The attitudes may be arriving from Vermont, especially in western NH, but the illegals are arriving from Massachusetts.
Those results illustrate the poor educational achievements by those polled. Unfortunately, looks like their idea of "it belongs to Mexico" is to make the U.S. as badly downtrodden and awful as most of Mexico.
Agreed! However the "immigration" of cheap mezican labor, is more likely our capitalist attempt to compete with the labor rates of the Chinese. That's the only reason I can logically come up with as to why BOTH partys will not enforce our LAWS!
Anyways that cheap mezzican labor turns out to not be so cheap after all, healthcare-disability-schooling-crime.

The door needs to be slammed so hard that they hear it as far away as New Delhi.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Mexican-American who has an eye on succeeding President Bush in 2008, recently told journalists that legal action toward illegal immigrants "should be done by federal law enforcement. This should not be done by local police chiefs."
Ah yes, the infamous "catch and release" method of "enforcement?"
I'll take the local cop anytime. Nice to see that Richardson is putting his heritage ahead of his country.

Wouldn't it be better to have spent the money they are throwing at the lawyer and hire five or six Ramirezes?
Surely no patriotic attorney with respect for the law (snort giggle) would stoop to defending (hahaha) an obvious criminal (heh heh) when the prospect of winning would set a bad precedent (haw haw) for the nation's interest...
Oh, I'm killing me.
Good tag line, BTW.

Ahh, but Mexican labor is no longer limited to lower-paying jobs. The illegals have moved into "real" employment, working alongside Americans with similar competitive pay. Their employers are breaking the law by hiring them and the illegals know it. They also know that nothing will be done to them even if they're caught.
Illegal immigration is not an issue for just Republicans or Democrats - as soon as Americans get disgusted enough, they will vote in (or out) politicians willing to do something about it.
Ramsey Clark, anyone? ;-)
