ALL--the other day I was discussing the closing of my PayPal account and what they wanted from me in order to do this. I wrote them again to ask them how I can close my account and I wanted to share this with everyone to show you what you have to do in order to close an account with PayPal. Something I will not do and think is totally unreasonable.
What I ended up doing is canceling that credit card.
Here is their response to requesting the closing of my account that has been locked do to lack of use (I also was notified by them last year that some accounts were hacked but my information was safe--which prompted me to ask them to cancel my acocunt. they wouldn't).
Dear ____,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. I am happy to assist you further.
The reason your account is locked and not available for use is because your account was left limited for over 90 days and as a result we lock accounts like this. If you want us to unlock the account and allow you to close this account, you need to send us some information.
Please fax us the information below so we may review your account further:
1. Copy of your monthly statement for the credit card ending in 5462.
The statement must show your name, address and account number exactly as they appear in your PayPal account
2. Copy of a current utility bill in your name for the address listed
3. Copy of your driver's license/passport
4. Change your password and security questions from your home location
You must use the cover page provided by PayPal. The cover page contains information specific to you and this access limitation, and using it ensures that your documents are routed and handled in a timely manner.
To print the cover page, go to: There was nothing here!
It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing PayPal.
Once this is done, contact us by phone and a Senior Agent will look at the case and see what can be done.
Sincerely,
Louise

This is what kills me...I want to CLOSE it...not Open a new one! I can understand showing private information for opening...but what they want is totally unreasonable...and I wanted everyone else to see this before you open up an account....I'm just sorry they have my name and address now!
"The catch here is that she had never used PayPal and didn't even know what they were."
A business partner of mine had a commercial checking account wiped out, to the tune of over $15,000.00, and the first sign of something peculiar was a PayPal account opened under his name. It appears that the PayPal account was only used to verify funds. The actual fraud was committed the old fashioned way, with counterfeit checks, which were cashed all across the country within days of one another.
Dear "Bearwash",
This email is to update you on the status of your claim for monetary relief from the In Re PayPal Litigation settlement fund, a class action lawsuit against PayPal that was settled in November 2004. No further action is required; settlement payments will be deposited automatically into your PayPal account.
The Claims Administrator is planning to make payments to your PayPal account as follows. If you filled out a Statutory Fund Claim Form, then the settlement payment will be automatically deposited into your PayPal by July 31, 2005. If you filled out a Short Form Claim Form, then the settlement payment will be automatically deposited into your PayPal account by August 31, 2005. If you filled out a Long Form Claim Form, those settlement payments will be processed as soon as they are approved by the Court. The Claims Administrator expects to have the settlement by September 30, 2005.
Did you contact spoof@paypal.com?
I got this email a few times, and was concerned it was a scam. I logged into paypal and removed all my credit cards from my paypal account.
There are scam Paypal emails going around. I got one (different than the one you received) and Paypal told me to ignore it. Call Paypal.
Fawn, they were phishing. That was not a legitimate communication from Paypal. NOT.
Yes--I send them spoof emails all the time....but I am not getting spoofed here...I called them directly...and we have been going back and forth for over a year...I keep requesting them to cancel my account...they keep telling me to send my DNA.
I can't use my paypal account...can I send you a check?
LOL
I've been getting scam emails for the last two weeks asking me to update my PayPal information. They look authentic, but when you go to the data input page they ask for a SS#, a dead give-away that it's a scam.
Ping
NO---this is real. I called directly. Also-- My emails contain this header: : ProblemsLoggingIn (Routing Code: C840-L001-Q110-T0305-S999) QID292 (KMM6193635V95176L0KM) I am talking with PayPal people...honest.
I get those and I don't even have a PayPal account.
Marking place.
Had trouble recently with ebay purchase via paypal.
I forward 2 or 3 spoofs every week, and always get a reply within minutes.
Open the email.
Click on file, properties.
Click on the Details tab.
Copy the IP Address of the person who sent you the message onto your clipboard.
Open another browser window and go to http://psacake.com/web/eg.asp
Enter the IP address and see where the email originated. My guess is it didn't come from PayPal.
I know...I get one a week. That's why when they officially notified me of the hack....I looked up their telephone number last year and have been going back and forth with them for over a year. I am not stupid to phishing or spam emails.
I was scammed, but it was more of a Tanzanian style.
just kidding...
Unfortunately that can't be done with AOL mail.....but I like I've said..this is NOT a scam. I called them directly ....not just emails that I INITIATED from the official website.. I never answer the spoof emails....you can tell by the link..it never starts with www.paypal.....
