My hunch is that potential investors or just bin Laden himself wanted a small demonstration of the seriousness of the terror cell. This demonstration would also serve to bring trust and loyalty amongst the cell members.

Very interesting. Your theory that this could have been a loyalty test is quite plausible. A video of the ten men mourning would be the perfect way to telegraph both the completion of the test--and the successful assembly of the players--without raising suspicion if it were intercepted.

Might have been a money-raising scam in itself! Lots of low-risk petty fraud schemes are used to finance terrorists while they train or to transfer to the "organzation" - PIJ, Hizzbollah, whatever. Maybe Bukhari wasn't much of a student or maybe was eager for his 72 raisins. Just a thought.
