FactCheck.org: NARAL ad "False"
FactCheck.org ^ | 8/9/2005 | Matthew Barge

Summary

An abortion-rights group is running an attack ad accusing Supreme Court nominee John Roberts of filing legal papers “supporting . . . a convicted clinic bomber” and of having an ideology that “leads him to excuse violence against other Americans” It shows images of a bombed clinic in Birmingham , Alabama .

The ad is false.

And the ad misleads when it says Roberts supported a clinic bomber. It is true that Roberts sided with the bomber and many other defendants in a civil case, but the case didn't deal with bombing at all. Roberts argued that abortion clinics who brought the suit had no right use an 1871 federal anti-discrimination statute against anti-abortion protesters who tried to blockade clinics. Eventually a 6-3 majority of the Supreme Court agreed, too. Roberts argued that blockades were already illegal under state law.

The images used in the ad are especially misleading. The pictures are of a clinic bombing that happened nearly seven years after Roberts signed the legal brief in question.

What's the point? Since when is NARAL concerned about facts?

It should be noted that factcheck chose to label this not "misleading" but "false" in their summary analysis.

Doncha know? As soon as I post it, I find it.

Search engine didn't pick it up, even though I used terms in the title of the other article.

How can CNN continue to claim it is the "Most Trusted Name in News" when it is running an ad everyone in the world knows is false?

Did CNN run any of the Swift Boat ads? They have already stated that they know the the NARAL ad is false but they have a policy to run any ad whether they personally agree with it or not.

FactCheck.org is pretty damn accurate with their assesments, they really are one of the few groups that could legitimately be called "non-partisan." So them calling out NARAL on this total smear job is good.

Agreed about FactCheck putting the brakes on these lies.

And another thing, anytime you get Carville telling you to put your focus elsewhere, you know you must have screwed up real bad.

Bump! I just heard about this ad being pulled. I never even knew about this story, from beginning to end (it being pulled) actually.

This would/will be a good resource if any leftist wants to throw this in our faces in the future though. God knows that some will latch onto something without following it through, and in this instance, even though it was pulled by NARAL itself, some avid leftist may still believe these lies.
